My solution to dealing with my MENA colleagues has been to just take note of wherever they're from and use that unless I get very specific guidance otherwise. One of the women I mentor is from Sudan and she spent like 20 minutes explaining the political dynamics over there and I was like '...so is it cool to just say Sudanese or do you have a better term' and she was like 'most people can't even point to it on a map, so yes that's fine'. This method however is not foolproof, as one of my teammates is from Iran but uses Persian as their identifier and got kinda salty about it. edit: and yes, this topic comes up very frequently in my office. I'm in California, and if for some reason it does come up Latin/Latino/Latina is what I usually use. Generally the assumption here is also that a Latin person is Mexican unless they state otherwise. It's not meant to offend the Salvadoreans, Hondurans, etc., but Mexican is by far the largest group where I live and most people around here don't view that mislabeling as any more of a faux pas than if you mix up Dutch and Luxembourgian.  In short: I think we all suffer from being way too online.

My immediate family didn't forget that we were poor Norwegian/German immigrants 100 years ago. Then there's my Bible thumper relatives, my uncle uncle who's still deluding himself into thinking he'll be rich some day, and my aunt who decided to take off for Oklahoma as a high schooler and became white trash by choice. My paternal relatives are a bit wacky and best in small doses. They're pretty well off but at least they always vote blue.

My family is a weird split. My mom and brother are 100% kool aid drinking chuds. My dad and other brother are Bernie bros. My sister is centrist dem and tries to play peacemaker. My mom also forgets that she’s a religious convert, and not the daughter of a holocaust survivor. It doesn’t stop her from spouting evangelical bs though.

My grandfather and grandmother on moms side knew each other in bremen and then accidentally ran into each other in nyc with no idea the other had emmigrated. Oma's sister and husband went back in the mid 30s then realized war were brewing. One of the bluebloods my oma cut hair for paid hitlers ransom to let germans leave and later gave her an 18th century handcarved dining room set after they got married after ww2. Opa joined up with the us army for the war. When the people came around to ask her what she thought of the nazi flag she wiped her rear end with it and handed it back to them. Opa spent the war as a clerk because of his age before translating documents found in bergdesgarden. Dads side is just irish catholics lol. Im white as fuuuck.

One set of great grand parents hopped off the boat from Norway at Ellis Island in the 1920s while the others were from Germany of some flavor. None of them were chuds/religious nuts, at least. Just blue collar working class union worker types.

One side of my family can be traced back to pre-Revolutionary War America, on the other I'm the first generation born in the US after my grandparents fled Spain. All of my grandparents were/are fairly conservative, but the political range of all of my aunts and uncles goes from socialist to working for Barack Obama and Hillary's presidential campaigns, so we sorted it out.

Mom's side's been in the US long enough that we've got records of the king granting an ancestor like, 300 acres in colonial North Carolina, and at least one ancestor of mine either served in or provided material support for the American Revolution. Dad's side was part of the Italian immigration surge in the 1890s, so they had 30-40 years of being not-white in a predominately German-immigrant-settled area of IL. These days we're white as all gently caress.

I'm banging an Iranian girl and her and all her friends get super butt hurt when I refer to them or anything that isnt in direct reference to the government of Iran as Iran. It's really amusing and I'm not sure if theres a cultural hang up I'm unaware of (probably) or they just dont want to be easily associated with the Iranian regime. Like she introduced herself to me as Persian and I was like.....you're Iranian and she was like well yeah. Some of her friends are super frisky about it though. They're all doctors so they're insufferable as is. They did tell me most white people dont know their the same thing and think Persia is still a country so lol. What's up w the Persian v Iran thing.

In my experience the friend who’s family left pre-revolution preferred Persian. The friend who’s family left post-revolution preferred Iranian but didn’t think too much about it either way.
