Either way, a good dog. and then notice how as soon as the cat goes over on its side and lays paws up the dog cuts it out instantly and backs off -- it almost certainly read that as a submissive posture and figured the cat was done playing. Of course from the cat's perspective lying on the back isn't submissive but defensive, so the cat hadn't actually been pushed into really stressful or unpleasant position yet
