Persian v Iranian is a thing because Iran has more than one ethnicity/nationality present within its borders. Further, Persian isn't restricted entirely to Iran, as one can be of Persian descent without ever having lived within the borders of modern day Iran.
|
# ? Aug 6, 2019 00:13 |
|
It's also a ethnic group vs state thing. Persians are also only one ethnic group that lives in Iran. There are a fair number of people who are Iranian who aren't Persian.

Persian is an ethnicity, it just so happens to be the majority ethnicity in Iran but not as much as you would think, only like 60%. And there's also a pre vs. post revolution thing that depends on when they came over and so on.

i never know when establishing someone else's ancestry is supposed to come up in conversation. one time i was talking to a nice lady visiting the city where i lived, and something we were talking about prompted her to say she had noticed i hadn't ever asked her where she was from, and i said one of the first things she had told me was that she was from Toronto, and she said yeah but obviously her family wasn't from there, and i said well, i was guessing that your last name was Vietnamese, but my last name is Polish, and that has gently caress-all to do with where I'm from, and anyway that was the first time i slept with someone the same day i met them, subscribe to my patreon for my complete BLT® system of romantic success via Being Less Terrible

My family came from Germany in the late 40s and we don't talk about it. So when people ask where "I'm from" I get hella prickly. I'm a seventh generation veteran with a very german last name. I'm from fuckin America and that's bad enough.

super german last name but its because my great grandfather fled the amish country i work with computers now. i hope he's proud. also polish but hey thats connecticut. great grandma fled poland because hitler was uppity. moms side is irish. great grandfather oh her side was supposedly connected to the irish mob and is treated as a saint by her side of the family (her included). he has a park named after him. i was the only kid out of all my friends growing up without any italian heritage. everyone was fuckin italian here.

Historically Iran was the native name, while Europeans tended to call it Persia, Persis being one part of the country. In the 30s the Nazis suggested Iran become known by that name officially (it being related to the Aryans) and the Shah agreed. This was unpopular and was reversed a couple of times since. I don't know why Persis -> Persia, but I'm just gonna go ahead and blame the Romans and/or Greeks. Godholio fucked around with this message at 04:54 on Aug 6, 2019 |

My favorite unpopular opinion amongst certain circles is that had the Persians beaten the Greeks in the Greco-Persian wars, the world would be substantially less hosed up than it is now.
