A few days ago I was sort of wondering if America as a culture has just blasted our attention span to smithereens or if it's just some kind of apathy, or maybe both, like we'll mouth platitudes and offer condolences over the latest catastrophe, and fifteen minutes later we'll be wondering what Britney Spears is up to these days.

...Then I got sidetracked wondering what Britney Spears is up to these days.

Today I learned that Americans can buy guns at Walmart(??!?!???!). Just the most agonisingly stupid concept imaginable. I wonder if a short attention span might be a kind of psychic defence mechanism against the horrors of daily life-?
Anyway, what is Britney up to these days?

Wal-Mart also attempted some kind of ban on violent video games at one point. While still selling guns of course.

 You mean... you can't walk into a giant poorly-ventilated metal box, sprawling across what once used to be verdant land like an asphalt-and-concrete melanoma, and walk out with everything you need to stalk, kill, skin, prepare, cook, and dispose of a large land mammal while in varying stages of inebriation?

Not every walmart...just the ones in the god-fearing suburbs and the countryside. And all of Alaska.

Can you imagine if a child's last thought as they were bleeding out in a schoolroom was a swear word they heard on a dirty music CD? Their very soul could be endangered!

This is far down the list of problems with the discourse on mass shootings, but back in Columbine there were at least actual reports of the shooters playing specific violent video games before people started wringing their hands about them.

Apathy is part of it, but i think a bigger part is that a big chunk of the country is mentally in an ugly, nihilistic place where they no longer seek or believe in any positive outcomes for themselves or others. The only thing that motivates anymore is hurting or attacking the Other. People no longer believe good things are possible, so they decide to settle for trying to direct the flow of poo poo to people they dont like. This is primarily a problem on the right, but you can find it everywhere.

Its not new, a guy named Mark Ames wrote an article called "We The Spiteful" in 2004 that encapsulated it really well. Its tied up heavily in toxic masculinity, and has been growing in leaps and bounds. Obama's victories put a lot of folks there (2nd victory more than the first i think), and of course, the last 4000 years of Infinite Trump have broken so many brains.

Yeah. They had done a bunch of mass shooting-related stuff (including a video about it for a school project) and it all got handwaved away. Part of it was that Harris was a perfect example of a sociopath who used his charm and imitation of emotions and regret to manipulate people into thinking he wasn't a threat. He then took advantage of Klebold's depression and similar feeling of alienation (they were both the "Everyone around me is NPCs" guy) to manipulate his suicidal thoughts into wanting to go out with a bang and get revenge on the world.
