anything like dwarf fortress that isn't hideous and incomprehensible?

Gnomoria was ok but got abandoned pretty quickly in development, and Rimworld I don't know how similar it is to DF in actuality but wasn't my thing.

I had a good time with Keeperrl, which is sort of like a less incomprehensible Dwarf Fortress mixed with Dungeon Keeper (more the latter than the former). It's still in alpha right now, but the dev hasn't abandoned it, and while it's pretty barebones it's still very playable and is very sandboxy. Like DF it also has an adventure roguelike mode but I haven't played any of that.

Planning a PS4 LAN with one other person (ok it's my sister). Any good co-op games we should consider?

I was thinking maybe Vermintide 2, or even Diablo III. I'd like to do Borderlands 3 when that comes out, but she said she doesn't like it. Any other games that I may not have thought of? Ideally I'd like a game that we can start leveling together, but also play (maybe a second character) on our own.

OK so I've played like every Space Trader game out there (I think). Here's the biggies I've played:

Endless Sky
Escape Velocity: Nova
Drox Operative
Transcendence
3030 DeathWar
Privateer
Elite Dangerous
Sky Citizen
Starsector
Space Rangers

And probably a bunch other I'm forgetting.

What are some other Space Trader games I may not have tried? You know the type: Start out in a cheap spaceship and trade/shoot/fart your way to riches and better space ships.

Naev is not another EV, and available free on Steam. It's not the best in the genre, but if you're craving a new game it's there.

Hmm, I think the most obscure title I can think of is Starship Tycoon. It's a 2004 Positech remake of a 2001 game. There are a glorious ZERO reviews online, but this :10bux: game has a Free Demo. Starlines Inc was cliffski's very first (maybe third, checking their mobybgames page after posting) commercial game, and a one-man project so let that temper your expectations, if it even works on modern operating systems.

quote:

Starship Tycoon puts you in charge of an interplanetary shipping company, you compete against AI controlled firms to survive in the cutthroat world of space commerce. Configure and upgrade your starships, hire and fire the crew, smuggle illegal goods, and wage price wars against your competitors.

What's a great space sim these days? The last time I played a great space sim was Freelancer, and I've been waiting for Star Citizen to come out for years, so I've given up on that one.

I've heard good things about Elite, also Rebel Galaxy Outlaw pops up here and there as a recommendation. Anything else I should look for out there?

Elite is pretty but grindy and a little empty feeling.
X3 is rich and detailed but can get overly complex/complicated.
Don’t know enough about Rebel Galaxy Outlaw but Rebel Galaxy was great if a little shallow.

Alternative option: Starsector is a great 2d top down mount and blade in space.

There still is only Elite or X. RGO is... not that. There are also some indie games like Void Destroyer 2, House of the dying sun and some others which are pretty cool in their own way, but not huge on production value/focused indies. Everspace is pretty great visually, but has a roguewhatever sort of campaign and time pressure per sector like FTL. I like it a lot as arcade space combat game but it's different to the mission based or free roaming stuff from before people decided the genre should be killed.

Jesus Christ, I can't believe X3 is still the golden standard 14 years later, that's grim. I suppose Star Citizen was supposed to be the next great thing in space sims, but who knows when that's ever going to come out.

It is out, it’s just not what was promised. They certainly seem to have found a formula that milks a shitload of money out of neckbeards.

I REALLY wish X3 didn’t have such an impenetrable UI. I had a lot of fun with it until I had to start managing multiple fleets.

House of the dying sun

House of the Dying Sun is the only recent space sim which gave me the same pleasure as playing Tie fighter, Starlancer and Descent: FreeSpace.

It's not an open world like Freelancer. Only scripted missions but it gives you the epic feeling of actually flying a starfighter in space battles. And the artstyle is remiscent of Homeworld and just gorgeous. It's short and there are no big surprises but it's fun to play which is probably the most important factor in a game.
