I don't even think it's cheap escapism, it's literally using the bit of your brain that supposedly separates you from the rest of the animal kingdom to have fun with other people. You may be misunderstanding: wat I mean is that it's escapism (i.e., getting away from the horrors of hellworld into a world where you can punch hell in the face and kill it) and it's cheap (i.e. you need to buy some books, maybe some dice). It's not cheap escapism, it is escapism which does not cost very much, and escapism is not bad at all.

Dungeons and dragons is great because you end up in fantastical situations that are actually a little banal (eg fighting a dragon) but also situations that are as ridiculous as they are fantastical like eg trying to psychically communicate with a potato, WhatEvil.

PDFs of indie RPGs are generally inexpensive, and there's some absolute bangers out there. For example here is Lady Blackbird, an entire ruleset, pre built characters, and an open ended adventure module on 16 pages. It's free. E: also there's one about wrestling!

Another D&D D&Der here. Unfortunately the group of people I DM for are starting to piss me off and the campaign is losing steam, after a hopeful start. Only one player is actually particularly keen, his wife seems very keen in conversation outside of playing but a year+ later she still cannot play her Bard (I can guarantee she has done no level of reading into her character or the rules), and she also doesn't contribute anything in game and will sometimes just start reading a book(!), another guy is ok but is a bit of an idiot and spends a bunch of time playing on his phone or laptop, and another guy who constantly spews inane non game related crap and seems to relish dragging out combat turns to everyone's consternation.

Critical role I think did a lot for it too yeah. The increase in roleplaying podcasts is wonderful for me because it's like an LP that I literally cannot watch and so goes perfectly in the background.

To be fair, I've lucked into a decent gm and group; no creeps, no wierdos and more stuff to do than just punch monsters (last night we ended up solving a big fight with a poltergeist by doing a religious ceremony to honour the dead..) I played a lot of very bad D&D in university though. Oh god, the horrors I have seen..

What I find weird is when I was in school 20 years ago literally nobody played D&D or any other RPG. There were a couple of kids who played Magic and I played Warhammer & 40K for a bit, but there were no tabletop RPGs at all. And now I'm older I see all these people talking about their TTRPGs games on Facebook. It's a bit funny but also I'm mad and jealous.

There's a really good gaming shop near me in town that does a D&D introduction night to help bring people into the community. I keep meaning to go but always end up walking past it and heading to the pub further down the road.

We had DnD at our school, but most then agreed that pretending to be an elf wasnt as good as being one in a computer game. So we mostly stopped the dice and paper and went into computer games.

Anyway went to share this with CoolCab and he was like "Yeah I love those guys, have you listened to their D&D podcast?" - I didn't realise at all they were a)brothers and b)famous outside of Monster Factory. Turns out they do a bunch of different podcasts and such but yeah, their D&D podcast The Adventure Zone is really great, and also involves their dad Clint McElroy who used to be a radio personality in West Virginia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXqjz3LWBa4 Highly recommend it to anybody interested in D&D - even those who have not played before as they explain the systems etc. as they go along.

My DnD group takes it in turn to GM. We've just finished one campaign where I played a down to earth half orc barbarian with super speed. A few highlights of mine: Throwing a rope out to my party when an enemy wizard was partway through levitating me over the edge of a cliff. My rope removed all threat from that encounter. Buying a useless rabbit paw from an eccentric traveling trader and praising it for any good luck we encountered. Bringing a gnoll's head on a pike to dinner with a regent. Rolling double 20s at a disadvantage. Dragging my allies at half my speed so they can cover greater distance in combat. I'm now going to play a high elf illusionist who's obsessed with careful planning.

Call of cthulhu seems like a really good system and I actually find d100 really intuitive. Also obviously lots of socializing cos if you fight anything it just kills you lol.
