I had two buddies (both early 40s) get diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer last year.

One got diagnosed when he puked up blood after a night of drinking. He did a ton of chemo to get the stuff that’d spread. They then did a bunch of radiation on his esophagus. Pronounced him clear (enough?) to take a 3 month chemo break. Just got scanned again yesterday and said he can again come back in 3 months. I think it’s been 14 months since his diagnosis.

Other guy got diagnosed December 31st when all of a sudden he couldn’t swallow. Checked into the hospital and never checked out, died 3 months later.

I used to work in a hospital. in the drug stockroom. It was my job to order and stock pretty much any drug that wasn't Schedule IV/V or Chemo. I know, well, knew (it's been 20 years) what hospitals pay for drugs, and it's positively a crime how much they mark it up. You know why "most hospitals use Tylenol" (as in their advertising)? Because SKB undercuts *generic* acetaminophen. Back then it was something like $8-10 for a quart-sized jar of extra-strength. 500 tablets, I think. I doubt it's much different today.
Of course, they are going to argue that part of the cost is the nurse who applied the shot, because they surely pay them $800/hr or something, right? They don't. My sister-in-law is an RN.

Of course the nurses don't get paid that. It's just like any other perversion of capitalism. They pay the nurses something that sounds good, like $35/hr, yet bill them out at $150/hr+... because they can. And there's nothing to check unbridled "capitalism" in the medical realm because supply and demand doesn't apply, but the "system" assumes that it does. So, we have rampant, unethical and obscene overcharging that is milking our economy, and even our very lives to the n-th degree. :toot:

Hey T-Square... it's probably geographically difficult/impossible unless you live in a few select areas, but the Mayo Clinic will take care of your girlfriend to the highest quality and if you can't afford to pay, they won't bankrupt you on top of the rest of the stress and pain and anxiety. Obviously they prefer to be paid, but they will not turn someone away who needs care because their insurance is fuckheads (all insurance is fuckheads.)

A childhood friend of mine's older brother (49) was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer today which has a 5-year survival rate of 14%... which is poo poo. He's fortunate enough to live in the Phoenix area where there is a Mayo though so he will get the best care available regardless of his insurance company's cooperation.

My uncle was a department head at the Mayo for 35 years and retired emeritus/is still on the board, I'm biased because of this but I've observed how they operate for a long time and they're how the medical industry is meant to work from the mindset of patient care and actual doctoring, not pandering to the insurance company's share prices.

Good luck to everyone's cancer saga. It's a gently caress.

Yeah, that's the lovely thing. We didn't know anything was wrong until she started getting abdominal pains and didn't get it checked out until they got worse instead of better. Even if she had gotten checked out at first sign of discomfort or whatever, it's already too late to do surgery as it's been in her breast for who knows how long, and in her liver already for long enough to develop painful tumors.

On the topic of your friend that survived is what I'm worried about as far as the rest of our lives though. The folks we've been working with at the cancer center are doing their best to move as swiftly as possible, but they seem relatively optimistic. I asked today about monitoring it in the future if their treatment plan works and we're able to kill off the cancer to the point where we can't see it in scans. My main concern is that if her current insurance isn't budging on getting us a PET scan when we have a 100% cancer diagnosis, they sure as poo poo probably won't authorize "preventative maintenance" scans afterwards, if we get to a point where we can no longer see cancer. The PA did say something the long the lines of "once we reach that point, she will be on some form of treatment, whether maintenance IV meds or oral meds, for the rest of her hopefully long life." So, :smith: and :unsmith:

I believe the closest is Minneapolis, we're in the Milwaukee area. Unless there's one in Chicago. I appreciate the sentiment and will keep it in mind though. The cancer center we're at is a bit of a drive, but it's very nice, quiet, out in the country, tons of different types of therapies and accommodations at little to no cost to ease the experience, and from all accounts of all of the doctors and nurses we've ran into so far elsewhere, they know their poo poo. Everyone is also very down to earth and knows how lovely the situation is, and how lovely the insurance companies are, so I'm pretty confident in their honesty so far.

Didn't they find the mass quite a while ago now? I was getting pissed at how long it took to confirm my girlfriend's cancer diagnosis, but really it was only two-three weeks since she first went to her doctor and got an ultrasound for abdominal pains. (Not counting the inept Urgent Care that shoved her out the door a couple of weeks prior and told her she's fine.)

SPEAKING OF, I just got back in the office from having the morning off to go with her to talk to the Physician Assistant that works with our Oncologist to learn about chemotherapy and the two other drugs she'll be on starting next week, and insurance denied her PET scan once again.

So: We KNOW that she has Stage IV breast cancer, meaning we KNOW that it's spread to at least one other part of her body (liver), we KNOW the cancer subtype and how we're going to treat it, and insurance is STILL going "Lol PET scan, gently caress that no way." So now we have to go do three CT scans tomorrow AM, chest, abdomen, and pelvic area, as well as a bone scan. It's truly loving mind-boggling.

It was officially diagnosed about 2-3 weeks ago after the mass was inadvertently discovered while taking an xray for his hernia a month ago.

Wheels are in motion and treatments will be commencing immently.

That sounds like the time I was sent home with a mild pain killer then the next day while boarding a flight they called and said I needed to return to the hospital immediately. They'd managed to mix up my results and I had a massive staph infection as well as other things. I got on the flight, since I was going to my parents near hospitals I knew, and checked in a half hour after landing.

Some of you were interested when I was talking about ebike stuff. Here's some more:

Rad Power just came out with an awesome form factor: https://www.theverge.com/2019/8/8/20791435/radwagon-electric-cargo-bike-review-car-replacement A cargo ebike is a great idea. I've got to get a rack on the back of mine, just haven't picked up the project yet.

Also, I needed to replace the bottom bracket on mine, since it was damaged from when it was hit while on a bike rack, too. I think it just tweaked the axle a little bit, but it was enough to trash the bearings within 100 miles. I couldn't get any info from Juiced about a replacement, so I took it apart this morning and found that it's got a 100mm wide carrier and the axle is 164mm... which is a total oddball size. I've got a cheapo coming from Amazon, but I was hoping to put a nice Shimano or something on there. I guess I'll need to do some more digging to find out if there are other options.

Ebiking is great fun. I've been using it for short commutes and it gets me where I'm going almost as fast, if not as fast, as a car for the few miles I'm going. And using it like that, I'm going full-out most of the time, which is 24-28mph and it gives me a range of about 20 miles. In contrast, I was lazy yesterday and took the ebike when I went for a ride with my daughter yesterday and with a much more sedate pace, I think the range would be easily 70-100 miles. Granted, that's at ~8-10mph, but that's a great range.

Just curious, why no to Humira? Is it just the $LOL cost or some side effect? My wife was taking Humira for her psoriatic arthritis, and it worked, but our insurance changed and no longer covered the (exorbitant) cost. Mind you, they’ll cover all sorts of things For osteoarthritis, but gently caress you if you have psoriatic. That’s apparently not uncommon with insurance. Dicks.

CBD supposedly works with controlling inflammation, so unless your pain is inflammation related I don't think it's going to help much. It does absolutely nothing for my back pain either, but it stops my crohn's flareups dead in it's tracks. Did you give it time to build up in your system? It takes at least a week. Also CBD is just like any other drug in that it affects people differently, my wife uses it to help her sleep, but other people I know that have tried it said it didn't help much if at all either. I'm really lucky that it helps me otherwise i'd be on some lovely drug with horrible side effects like Humira.

That being said, i like to tell people that have had no luck with Hemp CBD to get registered and get the real poo poo first before they completely write it off. I've tried Hemp CBD a few times in an effort to save money (it's half the cost) and it's failed me every time.

I also smoke regular weed and tbh it's not some awesome pain reliever like some people make it out to be, at least for me. It helps take the edge off my arthritis pain a bit but that's about it. Most of the time it's not worth getting high just for a small amount of pain relief when I have poo poo to do. At the end of the day sure, but otherwise no.

One of the side effects is death, lets just put it that way.

The more common poo poo is always being sick because your immune system is compromised on it. That's the biggest complaint, there are more problems but most people that are on it complain of being sick all the time.

(and can't post for 11 years!)

Went in to help J at work. Clocked in at 11, but got stopped by a seemingly very lonely older lady who just wanted to chat about... orange juice and the mailer we send out. The way the conversation went, I suspect she's dealing with a bit of dementia. :smith: But I didn't get to J's aisles until 11:15 because of that. I did give the manager on duty a heads up to keep an eye on her; she had prescriptions in her basket, when the pharmacy had been closed for over 2 hours, and asked how much longer we were open (2 hours), which got a "oh, I should hurry then" out of her.

"WHY ARE YOU SO LATE". Strike one dude, I'm here on my day off. I got stopped by an elderly customer, I was as nice as I could possibly be in helping her until it became obvious I couldn't help her, then got away as politely as possible.

An hour after I'm supposed to leave, "hey, I need you to go front aisle <x>". I remind him I'm there on my day off, was supposed to leave over an hour ago, and casually mention a doctor's appointment (.... I didn't have one, but gently caress him, I was supposed to leave at 6, it's now 7:30, and he knows I have chronic health issues anyway). "WELL WHY THE gently caress DIDN'T YOU TELL ME SOONER? YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN WE'D BE STAYING LATE!" Strike two, bitch. You ain't my boss, AND I was told it'd be a light load when I agreed to come in to help your rear end.

Me: "Look dick, you should be thanking me. I gave up a drat nice dinner, a movie, getting laid, and my catering shift with my other job for today [Friday] to come in and help your ungrateful rear end out. I'm not hearing any 'thanks for coming in on your day off', I'm hearing you bitching about me leaving a full hour and a half after the time I agreed to stay till. So where's my "hey man, I appreciate you coming in on your day off"?

Him: *silent stare*. I guess that's strike three against him. Nope. Nooooope nope nope hell nope. Next time boss asks me to come in and help frozen, I'm specifically going to be asking if I'm only going to be working with J. If so, I will give a very resounding "gently caress him, he can deal with it himself". Management knows he's a dick, they put up with him because he's fast and he's been there so long.

We did knock out 8 pallets between the two of us, which is enough to challenge all of us combined (3 primary aisles, 3 loooooooong bunkers, 7 end caps, and another aisle's worth of freezers in other departments that we, for some reason, stock, despite them belonging to seafood and meat). We finished a bit after the store opened, but it was pretty backbreaking. Fitbit logged a lot of spikes in heart rate up to 130ish (my resting is high 60s, occasionally low 70s, seems to be in the 50s when sleeping - at work it'll spike up to about 110 sometimes).

I had an ER visit a couple of years ago - they did get me into a room quickly, and drew 3 vials of blood. Then I .... waited. And waited. And waited. Someone eventually brought me some water; a doctor came in briefly and basically said I was making poo poo up, but they'd "get me in for scans soon". The 3 vials of blood were left sitting there for over 8 hours (along with me, in a not very good mood, and overall feeling like death). The only upside is the nurse that drew the blood was cheery and friendly; everybody else was very much in a "gently caress you" mood.

I finally gave up, grabbed the vials (because I knew they'd try to bill me for labs that never got run - besides, don't you have to run it within an hour or two of the draw? or not?), and walked out. Drove to a different hospital where I got seen immediately. I got a phone call a few hours later asking if I was still in the hospital. And yes, I did get a bill in the mail for labwork and the ER visit. I sent them a picture of the vials on my desk, with the hospital's stickers on them, asking how they ran bloodwork without them. Never heard anything else.

tl;dr gently caress county hospitals, but they were the closest hospital in-network (21 miles away!) for my insurance. At least in Austin, 2 of the 3 major hospital networks are in-network, including the closest hospitals.

Which is apparently impossible to get in Austin (DAMNIT TRUMP, YOUR WALL IS KILLING CHEAP WEED). She bitches about how much weed costs, but this is stuff that gives an experienced smoker couch lock.

I know I have a fuel line leaking, but it's not spotting on the ground enough for it to be noticeable (it probably is, just evaporates quickly) - there's a faint fuel odor around it (strong inside if I drive with the windows or sunroof open, totally gone if I keep the windows up and ac on - moving or parked :iiam:). I didn't think it'd gotten much worse.

.... it does spend several hours a week idling though. I take my lunch breaks (and some 15 minute breaks) in the car, since the store shuts off the HVAC at night. Gives me a chance to cool down (and get away from coworkers for a bit).

I recently tried CBD (Cannibis) sublingual and it was absolutely worthless for me. I was hoping it would help my sleep and maybe the back pain I sometimes get..... but on me it was worthless on both counts. A little disappointed after all the :350: promoters kept saying how it basically helps everything (which is a super red flag I know) but I was a little optimistic.

Oh well.

I strained my back pretty bad recently, so much so that any activity that involved moving, or not laying in one specific position hurt like hell, building throughout the day, and work was aggravating it so it wasn't healing, giant doses of ibuprofen and ice weren't touching the pain. Then I said what the hell and got some CBD topical salve, I didn't really believe it would work, and I don't use any sort of THC/Marijuana, but holy gently caress, the second that poo poo touched my skin the pain was just... gone, best feeling of relief ever. It did lose efficacy for me slowly over the next couple weeks, but it let me race dirt bikes and work in my garden and move around until my back healed.

I'd like to see this in a fitment similar to the ubiquitous Dutch cargo bicycles; they just chuck their kids in the wheelbarrow part and tool around town, optionally with a helmet.

I have a Bulls Dail-E Grinder that I use to commute to work and it is awesome and always gets looks and questions. I use it for everything and it has basically replaced my car, which is why I was comfortable spending so much on it, although I got it on sale at a crazy value. Highly recommend e-bikes to everyone.

You guys who can ride bikes to work etc. are lucky.
Dallas/Fort Worth is suburban hell, and everything is miles away from everything else. I'm close to the grocery store, a bunch of restaurants, and 3 auto parts stores (which is handy), and that's about it. Also, North Texas, so 100+ degreesF and 40% humidity in summer.
I'm only about 12 miles from work, but it's pretty difficult and much longer to not use highways.
That said, I'm not sure I could handle being in an urban location where biking would be practical - I spread out too much, and have far too many cars and projects. Honestly, I'd prefer to be further out with more land, except for the whole, well, further out thing (I like what access I have to everything, and fast internet. The "further out" is mainly for costs and, uh, lack of city code enforcement.)
So what I'm saying is I want to have my cake and eat it, too, I guess.

And hoo-boy on the Humira side effects. I will have to mention that to the wife. It's not really an option anyway, being something like $5K/month for the dosage she was using.

Yeah I had no clue until I was on a crohn's forum (there's a forum for everything now lol) and there was a thread about Humira horror stories and i was like :stare:

The amount of people having problems was crazy, almost everyone said they were sick of being sick all the time and of course cancer stories and poo poo like that. This was before my doc tried getting me on it, but I knew he would eventually because the steroid treatments weren't working and when that time came i said hell no I'm gonna try CBD first. Thank god it works for me, it doesn't for everyone.

Amen. Wife and I work in opposite directions from home, each about 1/2 hour by car. No way I could bike there (2 hours 40 minutes according to google, each way). America is just too drat big.

We only live about 10 minutes from work, but we carpool 90% of the time with my company truck (her office is 3 blocks from mine). Massive money saver for sure, but it does handcuff me a little bit if our schedules don't quite mesh.. IE: I am tied up later than planned at work, vice versa.

RE: CBD. I tried taking it 3 days in a row with no discernible effect - maybe I'll keep going a little longer on it to see if it does anything at all before turfing it. I purposely bought the kind with minimal (~0.6mg or something) THC so I don't think it's good for much else.

I was told by my dispensary to give it at least a week. It started helping me in a little less than a week, some people it takes longer, and some it doesn't help at all. It's worth a shot for sure.

It's morbid as poo poo! I just want to hang out with my dad and work on his cool toys but he just wants to talk about poo poo we've talked about 87 times already!

Look at this cool rear end poo poo! I just want to go ride on train tracks with him but he's all "ho ho ho I could have a stroke at any moment"

Lol when we went for the girlfriend's liver biopsy last week, (The week before last? I already can't keep all of these appointments straight.) I could tell the two older nurses that were getting her ready for her procedure were kind of getting on her nerves, but then they left and the younger phlebotomist came in to get some blood samples. She was whining and telling her that she was probably going to have a hard time getting a vein because hers roll around or whatever, and the phlebotomist just goes "Aw, have no fear, whenever I'm in the room blood will spill" :black101: It got a laugh out of us.

On Wednesday she got her IV port installed in her chest, and right after she was wheeled in and still a little drowsy she said "Psstt come here, I have a secret!" and I leaned over her and she said "When they were doing the procedure, I accidentally tooted!" :shobon:

When I lived in Dallas I rode that same bike from my apartment in old east dallas to Knox Henderson, probably like a 15 minute ride. It doesn't sound bad but when it was getting to the 100s, it was unbearable. I moved to Seattle shortly thereafter.

The replacement fuel pump and gaskets increased pressure on the injector lines and they sprung a leak further down. IIRC fixing that was next on the list but the jeep burned first.
