There's a map affinity system??
I have read/watched several RD lps and somehow I dont think I'ev ever heard anyone talk about that
if you look at the actual in-battle menu when you hover over an empty space, it shows you the map's affinity. when you hover over a character of the same affinity, it shows their affinity as glowing. if the unit's affinity matches the map's affinity, they gain a small hit/crit/avoid boost.

it's maybe the most pointless mechanic to ever be in a video game. there's no way of interacting with it or changing it and the boost is so minor that you'd never not deploy a unit/deploy a unit just because of it. it seems to primarly exist to give the boss of each map a small stat boost because they all have the same affinity as their map.

Just how many mistakes have you suffered on the way here?

An uncountable number, to be sure.
3H does actually use the limited "only a few of your closest friends can support you" system, but only for people outside your house. Everyone in a house can support anyone else in the same house, which seems reasonable enough.

I know you're talking about limiting the number of support you can get in a single playthrough, but personally I've always thought the "these two people will never be friends, no matter what you do" was a pretty important part of the system too.

Maybe Priam from awakening but man renault sucked
renault's actual supports rule though, the writing's generally interesting. and hes kind of useful in speedruns/ltc runs since hes a guy who can spam fortify in the final battle/use rescue/warp.

How many character epilogues in Fire Emblem just go "hosed off one day and no one saw them again". Ike has the famous one, but Volke also dips and so does Rutger.

Renault is really good because he comes with decent magic and A rank staves. He's almost certainly more useful than your twelfth best combat unit.

tbh it was insanely common up to awakening, like 5-6 characters per game would have that. its basically just 'we couldnt think of an ending for this guy'

ironically like half the characters who have it in fe7 are ones who actually did show up in fe6

Remember in FE7 where you're allowed one 6 support convos per character, so 3 at B or one A, one B, and one C. That kinda made sense because standing next to your few closest friends in battle giving you a boost was a sensible idea, and characters that were married started with an A together when you received them. Now anyone next to anyone is a boost. There's no planning ahead, and another consideration removed from battle.

I feel like everything is just grinding stats in this game, so many bars to fill up between levels, skills, support, and battalions. Also the game is not designed around introducing a certain character at a certain point so all possible character development for students is in supports or paralogues which can just kinda fit in anywhere. I do think the supports are written well enough though... just insane how many there are to view instead of writing the characters into the story proper.
counterpoint: having supports with everyone feels fun and good and makes the classrooms feel like found families (especially given so many of them have backstory that's just "by the way, my family life loving sucks")

if you go out of your way to recruit everyone, then yeah, I could see it being kind of an annoying slog, but playing casually it feels fun and cute

Endorph

also supports in fe7 were so cumbersome to get that tehy werent a real tactical consideration because you'd maybe have five c supports in any legitimate casual playthrough. if anything the current system is way more of a tactical consideration than fe7's because you actually have supports, so you're at least encouraged to keep a tight formation, and units you send off on solo missions like fliers feel penalized.

Unless you read the manual (lol) you'd have no idea what the support system was or what it did in FE7. Sacred Stones at least had a tutorial. The GBA system seems to assume that every map takes you 30 turns to complete

Manuela is strong as gently caress just have her battle her way south. The only actual problem on the map should be the pegasus knights which you can bait into attacking someone else if they go into range of someone else before Manuela, they won't ignore other units to beeline her

Manuela can duel with the bandits until the pegaponies gently caress poo poo up so it's basically a time limit rush to kill the commander. Flayn has wrap by this point.

fun fact: I had to divine pulse that mission like 4 times because I didn't have any good movement mechanics at that point in time, and it was impossible to get to the commander before he sicced the pegasus knights on her.

on the final try I realized that she could actually go south and meet up with the rest of the team, I thought the forest near the beginning was impassible for some reason

I turned Dorothea into a mortal savant, realized that she only got two casts of meteor as a warlock, and reclassed her back immediately.
She's so slow and meteor is such a good spell that it felt wrong to do otherwise.

She'll most likely be my dancer this time around, though.

Well well, mister fancy-pants, I hope you're wearing your matching sweater today, or you'll be cut down like the ugly tree you are.
I love Mila's Turnwheel/Divine Pulse as a concept but they really need to tone it down a bit in future games. I'm a little ways into part 2 and have twelve charges, which kinda takes all the tension out of the game.

IMO any future game that uses the system should have you start out with only one charge and max out at three or so.

The game has zero tension. Feels like a visual novel occasionally interrupted by a bad strategy game. It may as well play itself.

AlphaKeny1

Ah, drat. I didn't even think of using warp with Flayn. I had to Divine Pulse the mission 4-6 times and was finally able to beeline straight to Manuela and protect her before the Pegasus Knights kill her in one attack.

edit: I'm playing on hard/classic, i assume on normal Manuela can just shoot down everything in her path

It has some for people who don't play TBS or FE games and haven't spent years internalizing all the system.

But really, even on Lunatic, FE games are always more a question of how much you're willing to grind and optimize during the logistics phases rather than solve any deep tactical puzzles.

Yeah, even capping it at, like, 6 would help. I think the very final Lions mission was the only time in the entire game where I ran out of uses, and it was literally fighting the final boss.

Could at least flip one or two, maybe.
Pulse is good imo, just the difficulty could probably be increased a bit across the board to make it a bit more important. I feel like maddening is going to be a very good fit when it's actually around.

I love the writing and characters and I'm absolutely a sucker for any kind of dating sim elements where you have a strong cast of characters. Fire Emblem gameplay is still fun even if not that many maps were challenging aside from the last.

I have a few runner ups but I'm surprised 3H is up there for me as a contender after I felt lukewarm about Awakening and really did not like Fates at all. I figured I'd give FE one more chance and hey it's paying off.

Only thing is that I wish the first part was more spiced up per playthrough. I reeeally wanna see Blue Lions story so I chose them second but my progress just ground to a halt because of how long it is to get to the actual differences. Been debating getting to the time skip then starting a Golden Deer save and getting that up to the time skip as well, just so when I finish BL I can go into GD without the "fluff"

Just finished the game on the Edelgard route :toot: Absolutely loved the game and the route I chose, but it's a bit of a shame how quickly it ended. There's so much left unexplored, and it practically ends with a "and then everything was fine the end."

without spoiling anything else (since I look forward to playing the other routes too) I've got a question; do the other routes go more in-depth into the world lore than this route? By which I mean Nemesis' deal, what the dragons even are, who the saints were, and so on. A simple yes/no is all I'm after :shobon:
