I feel terrible for my oldest friend. His wife is undergoing first round of chemo for cancer in her chest. No one deserves to go through this especially her with two younglings under 5. However I have a moral predicament. They setup a GoFundMe but I know for a fact they have private medical cover AND friend is a miner on a healthy 6 figure income and she is an accountant. Not exactly short of money. I want to support them one way or another but I think the GoFundMe is a really poo poo thing to pull.
In May, my Dad was diagnosed with cancer, he had his first round of chemo last Tuesday. Thus far, he is trying to remain positive, he has even said he fells happy and kinda relieved. His income is about to run out and the 6-18 months the doctors gave him will mean he won't have to worry about going back to work. I just hope my Dad is able to keep enough saved up to pay his taxes and not get his income seized, keeping enough saved for taxes has been difficult in the past. It's a substantial amount, and to make it worse it's a county tax that just keeps going up several percent each and every year. I'm certain the positive attitude won't last long, hell I'm sure he is worried right now but just doesn't want to show it.

The part that sucks about this is my Dad and his doctors are always very optimistic about his problems and then they go and find something way worse than expected. Case in point, a couple years ago he had a blister on his toe, a loving huge blister but "just a blister". After a few months with super antibiotics that would totally cure the infection he ended up with on dialysis with his kidneys crashing and he lost half of his foot. In April, he went in to his doctor because of acid reflux, he was scheduled to have his gallbladder removed in two weeks but my sisters doctor could do it sooner. Except my sister's doc was more thorough and found that his gallbladder was fine but his stomach was blocked by a massive cancer tumor thus causing the acid reflux. This tumor was totally going to be removed by a 2hr non-invasive surgery which turned into an 12hr open surgery that gave him a complimentary gastric bypass and left "a little bit" of cancer on one of his organs. Tuesday and Wednesday my Dad was telling me how the chemo drugs were nothing, couldn't feel anything. . . then yesterday he said he was feeling constant dizziness and nausea. I've learned to expect that when my Dad and his doctors say "everything is awesome" poo poo is about to go south.

Sorry to go all e/n there, on car related poo poo I have to learn how to deal with Copart now. My wife traded in her SUV last May, and last Thursday Copart Fedex'd a request for PoA to release the title to the new buyer. Apparently the new buyer smashed the front end less June 2nd and The General won't pay until my wife signs over the title. I plan to call the dealer we traded it to and ask them if they can fix their poo poo or if I actually need to sign a PoA to Copart. It kinda sucks to see a vehicle that I took good care of and meticulously maintained got totaled so fast.

At my old place, I had an older UPS doing backup duty for the modem and router (I don't trust it with the PC, as it occasionally just powers off for no good reason - hence why it got replaced).

Well, it's been sitting a year. I dug it out of storage; tried turning it on before plugging it in, and got the low battery beep. Okay, that's to be expected, but at least the battery has some kind of charge. Let it charge for 2 days... (I don't have the proprietary USB cable for it anymore, FWIW). I wanted to use it to keep the modem and router running here; the power doesn't go out often, but when it does, it's out for a bit, and both T-Mobile and Sprint barely penetrate the building.

Just did a scream test. It died immediately. Swapped the batteries between the two UPS's - it shows fully charged in my main UPS. Flipped the breaker, and my main UPS immediately died, while the old one stayed on.

So I have a 12V SLA battery that two different brands of UPSs both recognize as being fully charged, but both power off immediately once power is lost when this battery is connected. Both will power up for a moment and power whatever's plugged in when you force them to, but shut off after a few seconds. Weird battery failure. It's not swelling or anything. It's been unplugged for a year, so I guess a hosed battery is to be expected, but I haven't had one fail this way before. It shows 12.7 volts open circuit, but drops to <6 volts the moment it gets hit with any kind of load.

I'm looking for a car for my wife, but one that has a large open trunk so my great dane can sit back there rather than destroy the back seat, and I've gone from ~2015 Subaru Outbacks to late 2000s Cayenne Turbos to the next gen Cayenne Turbo to early 2010s Lexus LX 570s. I guess the correct thing to do not is not buy anything right now, and figure out what I'm really looking for. The LX 570s really hold their resale value, but I'm assuming they'll be cheaper to maintain than a Cayenne. Still seems crazy that they're in the mid $30ks with 100k miles on them.

Sounds like the dealer's issue. :v:

But seriously, someone hosed up BAD here. And judging by their choice of insurance carrier, gonna guess your wife's SUV went to auction, some BHPH lot got it, and financed it at 20-30% APR with weekly payments. You need to contact the DMV in your state and make multiple complaints.

And STR speaks from experience with used car lots and title fuckery.

I've had my own little drama with selling the Juke. Had a guy super hot on it the beginning of last week. Wanted the car, prepared to "pay" my asking price. But, he needed a loan. His primary bank wouldn't write loans for vehicles purchased from private parties (:wtf: Chase?), so he went to US Bank, who would. He jumped through a lot of hoops, they would only write the loan up to $8900, when the purchase price was $9800. So, we made arrangements to pay $400 cash and $500 cash in a month, on top of the loan check.

Then the bank said they would cover the full amount if his wife co-signed. So, she did, which took another couple days to get here there and get the paperwork done.

Friday afternoon I spoke with the banker himself who said they were approved for the full amount, plus taxes and title and all that was left was to arrange a meeting time where all of us could meet to sign over the title and issue the check. I asked him if he could do Monday morning (this morning) and he said he could, buyer could only do after 4:00PM this afternoon, which was fine.

Bank emailed the buyer this morning that he was approved for $7900. :fuckoff: I don't know what the gently caress is up with that, and I'm not a party in the discussion, but I sure became one when the banker himself tells me it's good but for writing the check and I take down all the loving ads I've got all over the internet.

I called the bank manager and spit some fire, waiting to hear back from him.

Lessons learned:

a) Never trust bankers OR car salesman.

b) A car is not sold until the money is in the bank.

c) I'm really loving lucky that I consider a car like this an annoyance to sell, when others have to struggle to get financing to be able to have it.

Oftentimes sales managers do really fuckin' dumb and shady poo poo and she doesn't find out about it until it becomes a very large problem.

For example, once we found out that they were letting a guy drive an inventory car with dealer plates for like a month without any sort of deal or transaction having taken place, because we were having issues getting the title straightened out and couldn't sell it yet. Nobody knew about it except for like two of sales managers until we got a phone call about him bitching because he saw the online price for the exact car he was currently driving went up. Then they tried to pin it on a different sales manager.

Regardless, not Crotch Fruit or their wife’s problem. Well, I mean they should file with the state that the car no longer belongs to them, for liability reasons, but if it were me, they’d have to pay me for my time to do the title work again, unless I got a truly great deal on the purchased vehicle or something. Pure idiocy.
