I only learnt recently that Japan and Russia still haven't signed a peace treaty from WW2 because of the dispute over the Kurils.

Is there a timeline for the naval attack? It’d be poetry to have Dec 7 Pt 2: Pearl Harder

We should start seeing a bunch more British ships, shouldn't we? Unless they're in hiding along with the USN.

Their subs seem to be more active again. Sending planes over the homeland is a death sentence. This might be the only time we see the Russian Navy. The Yamakaze continues it's heroics. Then the main defence force finally engages! A poor day for the planes here. We continue to land our hits. The Manchurian air bases continue to come under sustained attack. This is my last area of resistance. Most bases are empty, but some still have air frames to destroy. The airfield strikes are painful, and there is nothing I can do to stop them – especially now every runway in Manchuria is in ruins. Still no sign of the Russian army however.

...And stay out! My god. They hit the runway. The lads at Guam keep themselves on the front pages. How are there still planes here? It's like a bottomless pit of points for the Allies. The dream of winning the air war slips further away.

loving TB-3s and SB-2s, the Soviets are really throwing old junk at you. (For reference, the TB-3 first flew in 1930 and was supposed to have been retired in 1939.)

9 August 1945 Today sees the loss of the escorts Amakusa, Inagi, Ikara, and No. 39, the minesweeper W-33, and the fast transport T-21 to various Allied aircraft (including British Pacific Fleet forces) and mines, mostly in Japanese home waters.

I like to imagine the rest of the fleet at Rabaul was sending the Yamakaze out alone as a joke but realized it was doing too well and had to get into the action before they got showed up.

We see more enemy sub action. Somebody get this crew all the medals! Now! They savage another invasion of Rabaul. Another mini sub is destroyed. We protect a convoy, at loss. Troops land. More New Zealand sacrifices. Maybe I've run out of planes to lose? Nope. Of course not. The first Soviet assault goes in, and they overwhelm our troops in a day. This still feels good. As expected, the Soviet forces hit hard when they arrive. But it'll take them a long time to move to the next base.

The Hailar garrison commander sets his tea on the camp table. He contemplates taking a nap. Nothing interesting ever happens in Inner Mongolia, although watching the runway get pounded into paste these past few days has been a nice break from the monotony. He's considering going back into the barracks when when he notices something out of the corner of his eye: the tea is rippling in the cup. In the distance, over the hills, he faintly begins to hear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-b5X69vREAg

10 August 1945 Much like yesterday, a mix of air strikes and mines take out a collection of minor Japanese warships: escorts Ohama, No. 63, and No. 82 (special mention for being sunk by Russian air) and minesweeper W-1.

So I'm thinking about starting a new LP, but one that's a bit different - Three Romes - The Triumvirate of strategy gaming. In which I play three games, at the same time - Imperator Rome, Field of Glory Empires and Total War : Rome 2. The idea is to do a compare/contrast in three games, starting off as Rome and seeing how they work. The idea struck me as, even though I love my roman history, I tend to avoid playing Rome in these games as it tends to be easier - but by doing three different Roman games, I can see how three different styles compare. How does that sound?

Bloody useless escorts. Another base falls to the Soviets. I continue to vent my anger on Guam. This is not a bad showing, considering. Some victims remain. Losses are still higher than I would like. Tanks vs horses is not very sporting. A low level strafing run ravages our shipping. That's more like it! Two bases lost to the Soviets in a single turn – that's over a year's Allied advances right there! The carriers are back in Tokyo getting some shore leave before “Operation Divine Wind” kicks off. Let's not even talk about this!
