Have you considered that what people might want you to be interested in is them? Who they are, what they think, how their day was? People are not simply tools for you to use, they're the same as you, all the complicated things in your head are also in theirs, and if you aren't interested in them as people, they will not be very interested in you.

Socializing is about giving up bits of yourself, your time, your wants, your preferences, in order that other people can share parts of themselves, that's how connections form.

Thinking technology has the potential to be useful to humans is not remotely the same thing as "we must always be 'progressing'" because that is the mindset of capitalism. No we mustn't always progress, technological and productive progress without a social foundation is exactly what got us where we are today. A perfectly static world is infinitely preferable to one where everyone gets killed by dickheads shouting PROGRESS as they wipe out most of the earth's biosphere and population.
A perfectly static world sounds like the end of history or something, the material conditions of the masses won't allow for a perfectly static world, because a perfectly static world with inequalities is injustice justified, and a perfectly static world without inequalities is neither possible nor, I'd argue, desirable, because there will always be new movements, new conditions, new art, and new people.

(Although, I suppose in the pessimist tradition you could get a perfectly static world without inequality if you stopped having new people, but that's a very different argument.)

None of this means that we can't guillotine tech billionaires though. Or billionaires in general.

Heck, even if you fixed health care, inequality, fake news and fascism today (which would be fantastic and better than corporate dystopia) wouldn't you get bored if Facebook were still the same 40 years from now? What would you even do in the mean time?
This otoh is not what I mean by any of that, because it's not really progress in the technological or sociological sense. Facebook is a good way of monetizing the casual labor of the terminally bored. Technological progress led only by the meander of the marketplace provides a good way of turning Congolese minerals into a new iPhone, but it doesn't necessarily provide the best means of solving root issues except by coincidence (or if the social issue can be monetized).

But they don't even do that. I ask "How was your weekend" and most of the time they say "Good" or "Nothing special". The rare times I see them upset I ask "Is everything OK", they say "Yes" and don't elaborate. Maybe I'm just incredibly unlucky. But I try. I just don't understand.

Of course, my idea of a static world is probably some kind of mostly agrarian society without rulers, not necessarily one that doesn't have technology but which probably doesn't have a lot of the things we have today, like mass use of aircraft, ships, cars etc, no global economy, because it's somehow managed to create a durable disinterest in them, belieiving that they just do more harm than good, that they demand more of people than they give.

And clearly that wouldn't actually be "static" as such because as you say, things change, but certainly I think it would be much slower and generally not interested in just making all the numbers go up, more speed, more power, more money etc. More concerned with ensuring that people have good housing, secure food supplies, health, peace and most importantly, time. And I would hope that those ideas could endure as long as possible, through at least some changes. Nothing lasts forever, naturally, but some things I hope would last longer than others.

And technology is certainly important in those respects but so much of what we have now is just loving pointless, it's either just to make some dickhead more money or it's to fill a hole made by some other dickhead in search of money. I don't mourn the loss of things that don't need to exist in the first place.

Genuine question: how can you have time in a "mostly agrarian society"? Isn't farming some of the most intensive labor imaginable? There's a reason why one of my biggest nightmares about the future is the beginning of Interstellar and that is essentially mankind's BEST case scenario at this point.

I think it's good to start with small steps in building up your conversational repertoire - don't dive straight in to trying to counsel people in crisis before you've got down the basics of a friendly dialogue.

"How was your weekend?" is a great opener, and they're giving the polite stock response. If you want to take it further, you could try "Get up to anything much?" They should then either say something like "nah, just the usual", indicating they don't want to continue the conversation, or tell you what they did at the weekend. Try to show interest even if their activities seem pointless or tedious to you. If you're feeling confident you can ask a few followup questions relating specifically to the information they've already given. Try to make these questions open, encouraging further elaboration, rather than things answered with a simple yes or no. In time people may start asking how your weekend was too, but I don't want to get on to such advanced topics in this first lesson.

How many people alive today work in farming? And how many people are fed by that labour? Even with how much of it is wasted producing inefficient foods.

But farming as it exists today is because of a huge number of technological advancements that, shocker, are destroying the so and the environment. Going into a completely sustainable agrarian society would essentially go back to the late 19th century where over half of the population works directly in agriculture.
