That, and to get a Fat Cat without using the marketboard you have to do a level 50 venture thing with your retainers, so! Yes! Goals! :D

Speaking of targeting, is there a way to make tab only cycle through the current enemy list? It seems pretty not-useful to tab to random nearby monsters that you're not currently fighting

L1 + Up/Down on the D-pad lets you cycle through your aggro list iirc

I like that Monk's core rotation gets a lot more "clean" once you finally get all your core rotation skills (around level 50 I think). Prior to that point you're forced to awkwardly change between back/side in varying ways, but it simplifies once that side attack that grants Heavy Fist (or whatever) is added in (since then you end up with parts where you have 3 attacks from the same side in a row).

Am I correct in assuming that ~ideal play~ for Monk involves using that stance changing ability when mobs move out of range and stuff? Otherwise it seems inherently impossible to keep things synced up for many bosses, since you can't maintain your rotation constantly with a melee job like that.

Also, what exactly is the point of shoulder tackle? It doesn't seem to have enough range to be a range-closer move. Is it just an awkward minor supplemental DPS thing?

I'm currently 55 on my Monk. Trying to get it up to do the rest of the ShB MSQ with, since I decided I'd rather do all these quests with something that kills stuff faster (and I really like the aesthetics of Monk more than, say, Ninja or Summoner, my other 70 DPS classes). The only DPS classes I haven't leveled to at least 50 are Lancer (which I haven't even unlocked) and Black Mage (which is like 29, so I've played it some).

That said I'm gonna have to get social for the Coils of Bahamut, aren't I.... I really want that lore. Ah well. Stuff to figure out later. Tonight I go to bed satisfied I defeated a big-rear end jrpg. (My playtime as of this moment is about 85~ hours.)

It is not strictly necessary. I did Coils of Bahamut using Party Finder, though sometimes I had to wait a while to find parties for the parts I needed to do. I would just occasionally check the Party Finder to see if stuff was up. Also, for Binding Coils you don't have to do every single stage to get the plot. I forget the specific stages that are relevant, though you should be able to find that somewhere. Most Coils levels are extremely easy with high level help, though a couple require knowing mechanics even if you're overleveled.

Out of the content listed in that post, I'd strongly recommend Crystal Tower since it's easy to do and has good relevant plot. I'd also strongly recommend at least attempting to do Coils through periodically checking Party Finder.

The cardinal sins of the FFXIV UI is no auto-targeting, no concept of in and out of combat, and not using xbox-B as a universal cancel/close button.

My experience with using a controller with FFXIV is that I almost liked it a lot. I actually did prefer it for just executing skills, since you can effectively fit more buttons within easy reach. My main issue was with targeting and camera controls. Though I imagine that would actually be less of a problem when fighting bosses in a raid than it would during 4-man content.

I want to start using a PS4 controller - I'm just now getting into dungeons with actual mechanics and my sloppy keyboard+mouse work is already screwing me over. But I'm already at level 35 and I'm not sure where to safely relearn my entire control scheme.

Start a Palace of the Dead solo run, work everything out from level 1 at your own speed. That's what I'm doing.

(If you don't have it unlocked yet, you can do that in new gridania at lvl 17)

If you belong to a free company you can use training dummy outside of a house to get the basics down.

I generally will learn the moves I’m supposed to use, and then will start running a littler lower dungeons. That way I can figure out how I want to shift my hotbar, to what isn’t super essential that I can shove on my 2nd bar and what I want to put on my cross hotbar.

Getting used to how to play in general is just going to come down to muscle memory. Just go out and fight.

It's an area that's highly rich in ceruleum, which is more-or-less magic petroleum. The fog is either an effect of it being rich or a consequence of the refining process; I can't remember offhandedly.

I started this game to hold me over till WoW Classic, and I'm glad I did. It's a great game and I'll come back to it after WoW gets boring again. I'm excited that all the expansions are supposedly better in every way. I thought I might get through Heavensward, but there wasn't enough time. I'm excited to see where the story goes someday.

It's way too early to say with any certainty what changes would come to ARR. I am highly skeptical of any promises of QoL changes like that after their solution for making the MSQDR dungeons more new player friendly was to make cutscenes unskippable.

I mean... that does make the MSQDR dungeons more new player friendly and the rewards are high enough that old players still do the roulette. Seems like it worked as intended

Yeah, in terms of improvement to effort ratio making the cutscenes unskippable and adding a very valuable roulette is about as good as it gets.

It was the easiest solution, and I admit I had gotten my hopes up for more. I run that roulette daily like a madman and I've only encountered a very small handful of cutscene skippers. Maybe 3 at the most. But it does happen and it's lame.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is expect the lowest effort solution in compacting ARR.

A few of those are EX trials which you don’t need to do. They stopped doing EX trials as sidequests at some point and just made them as unlocks. Most people do EX trials unsynced nowadays for their weeklies and pony farming. You can usually find EX parties in party finder though if you want. They’ll go by fast too if it’s unsynced, which it usually is .

Honestly, we’ve probably got enough newish players in the thread that we could group together and do the EX trials synced if we wanted - I know I’d like to see them properly, but I gave up on DFing them after two hours of hell in Thornmarch. I’d be happy to bring a red mage, dancer or paladin.
