Interview with the Vampire is basically the same framing device and episodic vignettes, but it actually has something to say about its characters.

The most obvious D&D adventure in the books is the side track to kill the dragon in the first book. It's the oh so clever DM who tells the party they're off to fight a dragon, but no wait, it's just a lizard high on meth! How cool is that guys? Also the DM who says that on the way to the adventure, you're shipwrecked. No you don't get to play it. No you can't do anything about it. You land without your gear. What do you do? ie. the worst DM. That is to say, Patrick Rothfuss.

It just seems like there are the themes of misogyny in his books, his postings, his comments, his behavior at cons, and the fact he's apparently well connected in the writing community so people there are afraid to criticize him. It's entirely possible he's the equivalent of a virtuous pedophile.

It's totally reasonable to ask for receipts on poo poo like that. To my knowledge there is no documented fire, just an uncomfortable amount of smoke. IIRC the most detailed creepery account was from a goon in this very thread. Totally possible they were embellishing or fabricating poo poo and we're biased against him but they sounded credible and the description of his behavior seemed to track with the better-documented things

Scifi fantasy authors have a history of being sex pests and the industry has a long history of enabling it and covering it up. Honestly the best outcome is that Rothfuss just writes juvenile wank fantasies for his audience. If the worst thing he does is encourage his readers to be self centered whiny man children that want their lives to be a nonstop porno well.. that's still lovely but it's the average level of every day life lovely, and not "committed a crime and attacked someone" lovely. One of those posts had the phrase "female readers" in it though and that made me laugh. Rothfuss doesn't have female readers, not really.

I don't know if he is a sex pest, but I do know that he isn't a gentleman. You don't tell everyone online how thirsty you are, or how some nice young lady asked for a hug, or how much you like cat sluts or whatever the gently caress. You go about your business and never tell anybody about your sexual exploits, it's unseemly. Women also won't want to be around you if they think you'll blab about poo poo.

It’s a behavior I learned from my mother and her father, as we all inhabit the Venn diagram overlap of “doesn’t mind fantasy and science fiction” and “is a total fuckin cheapskate” e: the first was a thrift store get, but the second was courtesy of the local library system, which is good b/c any price would have been too high for that book SatansOnion fucked around with this message at 06:17 on Aug 15, 2019 |

I know a lot of women who were into NotW when it came out, and most of them have English degrees, some at the PhD level. Some of these were colleagues from grad school, so I respect them as smart people because I'm familiar with their professional work. That said, I don't know how much sentiment has turned against him over the past 10 years because I don't see them much these days since everyone spun out across the country post grad-school. Back then, I'd say that even though most of us had one foot in the Gender and Women's Studies department and thus a pretty robust background in academic feminism, we just had really low expectations of what feminism looked like in Sci-Fi/Fantasy media. People were a lot more positive on a lot of lovely dude "Feminist" stuff back then (Joss, Ready Player One, Rothfuss, etc.). I was way more pro Joss when he was one of the only ones making poo poo that was readily accessible in popular media. For a long time, there just wasn't that much visible stuff that was actually good for women in Sci-Fi/Fantasy so a lot of us just took what we could get. Now that the landscape is better, I think a lot of stuff that slid by in the late 90's and 00's doesn't hold up to reexamination.

I can't loving believe this never came up during all the months I was interested but hadn't bought the book yet, just constant hype for the book and the author. After finishing a good chunk of the book I asked online if the whole thing is just him being the biggest Gary Stu kid/teenager of all time and how much of it will be spent with him at the university. I stopped reading after getting an answer. And today I found out about the Cthaeh scene which sounds cool and it's yet again a tiny part of the whole second book. What a waste of time.
