Oh they definitely do soft-recuts for TV especially in the late night cable porn era, but no one was ever convinced that those were good, in fact Im pretty sure those are the bottom of the barrel of films. No one ever became a great actor through porn, or script writer etc

Meanwhile you had teenagers growing up in FF7 convinced that it is the greatest and deepest story writing ever conceived, to make the early internet generation that would forever taint it's history like a skidmark on your favorite pair.

FF7 actually has a lot of interesting poo poo going on from all indications in retrospect mind, which the fanbase tends to miss almost entirely and in their memories it gets turned into what we'd call the bog standard cliche-ridden JRPG

I wonder if before JRPG there were people in Japan who really wanted to make an anime but had to settle for a DnD campaign.

I guarantee you that there were, there are, and they absolutely have their equivalent in people in the rest of the world who really want to make a fantasy series but have to setttle for a D&D campaign

Hell, there's an entire stereotype of GM who very clearly just wants to flesh out the draft for his fantasy novel and tends to be a pretty lovely DM as a result, also the ones who desperately want their campaign to get turned into an anime in a plan usually missing some steps

I think I read about that, in Japan they have a whole genre of novels or comics or something, where it is a transcription of a DnD-equivalent of a campaign, that often spawns an anime. I think it's interesting, but also shows an exaggerated absence of creativity IMHO.

You don't need to be super creative when the entire reason your industry exists is to show off young girls in their underwear.

To be more accurate about three lines in one person should just wander off and the other person should jeep walking and pull out a walkie-talkie and just continue talking as though this is normal

Japan literally has an entire genre of this to the point where publishers are starting to try to crack down on it and it's starting to infect the West with Ready Player One.

All anime is Dragon Ball, really. Even the series ostensibly about playing basketball or riding bikes just throw their hands in the air and call out everybody's power level so all encounters can be reduced to comparing numbers on a card

...which is not unlike real sports. I guess everything is Dragon Ball

Hey now, there's also 'my guy died in an insane brutal ridiculous way'.

Dwarf Fortress in general. Emergent storytelling may be basically making narratives out of random number generators, but hell, that's basically sports.

the licensing for this show must be the most tangled web of rights ever seen. especially considering most of the game they feature turned into huge franchises over time. they have Konami, Square-Enix, Capcom, Virgin Games, and Hudson Soft off the top of my head. i can't imagine what the meeting for the DVD release looked like

They've slowly been making the game better with each update. I've been enjoying it since the last update that added multiplayer.

I haven't had a chance to play today's update, but everything I've heard about it makes it sound like it will be really good. I think with today's update, the game is finally living up to the hype that the game had prior to its launch.

Probably depends. Video game companies are infamously careless with licensing a lot of the time, compared to other media companies who hold jealous strangleholds on it. (especially the music industry)
