academia can provide some good ones sometimes but good luck finding them i found a brilliant piece about citizen four that i have unfortunately never been able to find again where the author argues that by mimicking the structure of a hollywood thriller the documentary kills most of its own impact because the nsa documents snowden was actually handing over become a macguffin device since the focus is on the distribution model for the documents and not the very actually important information theyre communicating

i thought about that that review a lot when i read mainstream reviews of snowden where most of them were negative not because of any specific critique of oliver stones style and more because he didnt put in enough effort to tell the story from the cias point of view these were some of the very same people arguing maybe a year prior that citizen four was the best documentary ever made

The massive jugs on display in Beyond the Valley of the Dolls made so much more sense when I found out that Ebert had been involved with it and had a big tiddy fetish. No wonder he and Russ Meyer got along.

:eng101: Alfonso Cuaron's uncle was a communist. When Alfonso was 10, he found a picture a young man in his uncle's belongings - the man, more a boy of 13 or 14, was being chased by men carrying bamboo sticks. His uncle explained that people attending protests, these kids who were students just like him, lived constantly fearing this reprisal, but still went out and protested because of their beliefs. It blew up 10 year old Alfonso's view of the world. Roma's pretty much about him coming to grips with growing up solidly middle-class while turmoil and death and horrible events rocked his country and his people, who were simply demanding to not die under the boot of right-wing authoritarianism.

That little piece of set decoration probably didn't slip by Cuaron, and if anything is probably a little ode to his uncle.
