Wait, where do you think anime comes from then?

Anyway, on that track, Kirby's a pretty safe anime. No one's got a slave trade, there's no fanservice, it's actually remarkably clean all things considered.

At one level it's always gonna just be Weird because it's a whole different culture - but it's all not transformer stuff? My favorite anime is Flying Witch which is basically if the 90's "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" was in the Japanese countryside.

Oh okay that I can understand. I probably did it wrong but I never got into GoT or South Park or a lot of shows so that's fair.

I wonder what's gonna be the next big thing though. Stranger Things and GoT are over, I hear good things about I think it's HBO Chernobyl but aside from that I have no idea what the big shows are right now.

yeah, like i have nothing against people who like it or hate it. like i do like some stuff like fist of the north star and bezerk is good manga and i watched dbz when i was little.

i know that. i mean i like the yakuza games because its crime drama game from japan and its cultural tourism for me because its interesting to see how stuff is different. Like when a gun is pulled in the series, its giant big deal, least in cutscenes. unlike say US crime games/shows.

Maybe don't generalize a medium by the worst dregs of it. Give Legend of the Galactic Heroes a watch especially since you're into politics. It's a hard sci-fi series about space Prussia versus space USA and is very relevant to today's political climate despite bring made in the 80s/early 90s. It's legitimately one of the best tv shows I have ever seen, animated or not.

Edit: whoops new page and of course it's already been recommended. It has zero fanservice of children or otherwise, the characters have noses and normal sized eyes, and nobody has purple or teal hair.

It is also where this eternally magnificent image comes from

I need to get back to watching this, one of the first few episodes has a great series of events where a grieving war widow protests the deaths of the soldiers during the Secretary of Defense of Not-USA's speech, admonishing him for the comparatively nonexistent risk and sacrifice he makes comfortably from behind a desk, and he responds by calling for civility, getting her thrown out, then later covertly pointing right-wing extremists her way to terrorize her at her home.

No particularly huge sirens from my memories, but kind of a general feeling. I saw some critics nail it is a weirdly conservative film at times. I cut it a lot of slack at the time because it's intentionally an exploitation-style prison fight movie. But, the main hero's a cool, white tough drug runner who doesn't want to work with those awful cartels, and what do you know but they come in and don't respect anyone and gently caress it all up. He's in jail because instead of running away he stays behind to stop straight up cartel super soldiers from massacring a bunch of cops. There's an interrogation scene with a Blue Lives Matter edge to it. The first insult against the main character is the detective asking if he wants to wipe his rear end on the flag...because he hates America...because he's selling drugs. There''s a lot of edge-lord stuff about how evil and powerful a cartel dude is. Maybe :nms: The central push of the movie is that Vincent D'onofrio has to get bumped up to solitary in southern domestic Gitmo, basically, or else the cartel is going to slowly amputate limbs from his unborn child, abort it, and generall torture/kill his wife...it's something. And while the evil prison guard is clearly the villain, there's a weird...admiration, or something, for him. It reminded me of the guy in the Stanford Prison experiment who wanted nothing more than to be the warden from Cool Hand Luke.

Not one specific problem, but it starts to form a picture.

If you make one Western with vaguely problematic themes, okay, well doing old film homages is tricky. It's like Cuphead. There's baggage even if you try. But then you do it again. And then you cast Mel Gibson to do a movie that's weirdly sympathetic to lovely, racist cops. I haven't seen Dragged Across Concrete yet, to be fair, because I don't want to pay to see it. What I've heard made it sound like the same problems as always turned up to 11 though.

I do think the bewildering stuff like schoolgirl battleship anime has some value if you approach it like outsider art or something off of deesillustration, where it’s foreign enough to seem exciting and alien, but still reads as a uniquely horrible indictment of your own culture

Your time’s still better spent on actually good art, but having at least a passing familiarity with terrible art is still useful for crystallizing your thoughts on things. See also: Ready Player One

I will fully agree it's a real slow burn to get going (about 12-13 episodes to get everything in order and kick off the main plot proper) but it really rewards the commitment and those early episodes are still important to put everything in place for the full 74-episode run.

Also 20th Century Boys is currently running a re-release with the Perfect Editions of the manga, so it's a good time to give it a read. It's up to volume 4 of (probably) 12.

I'll be honest that I haven't seen Tanya the Evil for myself, but the only person I know who reccomended it to me was a guy who complained about SJWs, threw stuff when he was mad, and then lamented that he didn't have a girlfriend.

I've not checked it out either, only heard that it's got a :thunk: premise but doesn't actually do anything terrible with it apparently.

The current hot isekai is That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, which is about a guy who is stabbed during a mugging and...is reincarnated as a slime. It's pretty good. when he's reincarnated he starts to build a nation of monsters so they can survive in a world of adventurers.

The anime was very successful and is getting a second season, the arc it will go into is apparently outstanding too based on what folks who have read the light novels have said.
