Eh.

Messiah is interesting. You rarely get to see an after-story years after the protagonist's victory, when he's tired and trying to keep that last few good vestiges of his vision together to somehow make up for the heinous cost.

Children is mixed, but I like how it basically shifts the whole post-humanism element into overdrive.

And I have a weird soft spot for God-Emperor. For such a reactionary author, it does a lot of bold things with an almost cruel lack of fanfare. Look, our invincible army is female-only because male power structures are predatory! Our hotshot heroic guy keeps getting cloned and clowned as a relic for millenia, and we all tell him he sucks! Dogmatic adherence to tradition kills every meaning behind its original purpose!

The others I can take or leave, though as the crew said, only hilarious things happen when sci-fi authors start to engage the topic of sex 'seriously'.

Yea I will say Messiah has a unique take on the typical sci-fi heroic story where you get to see the hero all 'jesus christ what am I even doing, I can't be the savior of an entire planet just because I did a random thing and some space witch said I was special'.

the plot and ideas and universe of dune are extremely cool and good but the actual writing is not. it was a slog.

Yeah, not gonna argue there.

It has a few moments, like Reveren Gaius Helen's meeting with Paul (The whole "A world is supported by four things... the learning of the wise, the justice of the great, the prayers of the righteous and the valor of the brave. But all of these are as nothing without a ruler who knows the art of ruling" little speech), Thufir Hawat's encounter with Fremen before his capture, and the talk between Count Fenring and Baron Harkonnen actually do a lot more to establish characters and the setting than a lot of the lumpy prose Herbert packs in elsewhere.

Hell, I unironically like the Dune miniseries! Like, it’s not award worthy, but it was weird and different from standard TV fare and that’s good enough for me.

Yeah, it's fun, and the cinematic depictions of the gimmicks of the Dune setting (knife fighting, stillsuits, sex witch super speed kung fu) were frankly better than the Weirding Modules and omnipresent sleek black Gigeresque aesthetic of Lynch's film. Too bad half the actors were random nobodies. Some of the bold costume and set design choices fell flat, but they had guts and a 2000 SyFy budget and they fuckin' went for it.

the problem with lynch's dune is that the fremen are kind of hapless and simple, which is the opposite from the book, likely because the story needed to be made into something more conventional for the film.

I feel I really benefited from reading a lot of Herbert's other stuff, Hellstrom's Hive for example, and the Dosadi Experiment in particular, for some of the same approach but a different aesthetic.
