The actual ending to Revolutions was Neo, Trinity, and Smith sitting on a beach drinking Bahama Mamas and going "Nah, this is much better."

I can turn my brain off for that stuff, just hand wave it away.

I can't hand wave away the ending when the whole point was Neo mourning Trinity and sacrificing himself.

If you can get past the monumentally stupid premise, and also pretend the other matrix films don't exist, and also get over a couple of the ancillary characters being killed off in really disappointing ways, and also get over the gun porn aspects, and also pretend there's any reason at all for neo and trinity to care for one another, and further accept that Agent Elrond and his sidekick AIs are simultaneously terrifying enemies and incredibly stupid, it's a fun action flick.

Yeah, I think the big problem, for me, with the sequels is that the Wachowskis got too wrapped up in the underlying philosophy of the first film and took what was subtext in the first film and made it explicitly text in the sequels

I think Far From Home gave them a potential angle to de-couple Spider-Man from the rest of the MCU, what with him being publicly outed as Peter Parker. Happy & Co. could just cut ties with him so Stark Industries isn't associated with an international terrorist or whatever they say Spider-Man is now.

One thing that always struck me about the first Matrix film is that, along with Fight Club, they are explicitly pre-9/11 films.

Like, the setpiece action scene of the first film is them just mowing down dozens of innocent people in a mass shooting because they are in the way

I actually really enjoyed The Matrix the first time. The movie asks you to just turn off your brain and enjoy the feeling of going down the rabbit hole. It was stylistically new and I love Keanu. It had a great soundtrack. Hugo Weaving was excellent. It was fine as a movie and I saw it several times.

I think the later films retroactively made the first one worse, because they demand that we actually engage with the premise instead of politely ignoring it, which highlights how bad and dumb that premise is. Fleshing out the details of a situation that is inherently stupid is a bad choice. There's a bunch of other specific problems too, but I think that's at the core. They obviously didn't have more movies in mind when they made Matrix and they were not creative enough writers to make up a good story to follow on to a story that already had a perfectly fine conclusion.

Basically it's a terrible case of style over substance and filmmakers huffing their own farts, and that style is now badly dated to boot.
