I also think it doesn’t help that most of the upper levels are grifters who dont really care while street level anarchists aren’t exactly doing it to rake in that insane cash. it’s also why neonazi gangs are generally much tougher because they are generally true believers

But once street gangs provided an avenue to actual power and wealth through the drug trade it just became about that. It still does happen sometimes like during Katrina but charity and community protection isn’t obviously something you associate with street gangs anymore. They’re dangerous not because they’re true believers but because they have actual experience organizing against a state that actually wants to crush them and with far more serious violence.
