Parked next to a Silverado in a Giant parking lot in northern Virginia. I spotted this little lady on the Silverado's door handle. Coaxed her into climbing onto my phone so I could move her to a nearby tree. Anyone have a guess what she is?

It's a crab spider. I don't know my spiders (much less thomisids) well, so that's about all I can do.

I wanna say she's Misumena vatia the flower crab spider / goldenrod crab spider / this thing has too many names They like to hang out on flowers and change colour in the pale green - white - yellow range to blend in with whatever they're sitting on, really neat spiders They don't run so good but they're excellent at sitting and pouncing and then sitting some more

This large moth friend somehow found its way into our basement and lightly attacked my girlfriend when she went to run some laundry. She captured it and we let it go outside. Looks to me like Ilia Underwing, Catocala ilia. One of the largest moths I've seen locally (SW Michigan) in a while.

this grasshopper was aiming to get mushed by a random vehicle at work so I picked him up and went to put him outside, but he was extremely interested in eating my thumb. shortly after I turned the video off he actually drew blood so I put an end to that. Apologies for the vertical video and noise, it's a loud place https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dedg5okxXKY&hd=1

On the downside it's been a terrible year for mosquitoes up here in Edmonton. On the plus side, it's been a banner year for dragonflies!

if you live near water in the orange zone with a lot of dragonflies and mosquitoes and could put up a birdhouse on a tall pole with good swooping area all around, you should look into whether purple martins are in your area and maybe put up a house. they're awesome communal birds and they spend their days dogfighting with dragonflies and other flying insects

Happy Flying Ant Day, Edmonton! I never realized how coordinated this could get, but at least five colonies in my area were in on the action when I walked my dog last night. I swept what I thought was a single female off my shoulder and felt a bit bad when I noticed a tiny male was there as well. poverty goat posted:
I think they're relatively uncommon in Edmonton, unfortunately (though it looks like we're just in that range).

If you find a mated queen, they're really neat for ant farms. I have a handful of queens sitting on brood/1-3 workers right now, and they're overall just fun to watch - there have been some neat threads on the forums, too.

This bastard crawled under my bedroom door last night. It's chilling in the bottom of a pint glass for size reference. It's clearly a male, but as with most spiders species identification is difficult. Based on location it's either Eratigena duellica, Eratigena agrestis, or Tegenaria domestica. Based on size I'm guessing Eratigena duellica.

Looks like T. atrica. That spindly look is typical for the species and probably the easiest way to tell them from T. domestica, which has a somewhat more stocky build.

Pacific Northwest. It's the only place outside of Europe where all three species were introduced.

McGavin posted:Pacific Northwest. It's the only place outside of Europe where all three species were introduced. Then yeah I agree with Cardio's E. atrica ID. Edit: oh apparently E. duellica is a junior synonym of the same spider so it looks like you were on the right track anyway! Cardiovorax posted:I'll be sure to inform the next one I see. They should be made aware! In all fairness though it's a pretty recent change, as of a 2013 review. I'd wager most people's ID books are much older than that. See, that's going to have the opposite of the intended effect. Now I'm going to want to pet/boop that silly snake, which would be a very bad idea, instead of staying far away and leaving it alone.

Pavement ant queen? It was acting dopey and crawling down the doorway in my kitchen from the dining room. I just wiped out a bunch of ants coming in through the outside wall in my dining room with some Terro. This was about the size of a carpenter ant, but notice it has wing muscles, a two node petiole, and spines off the thorax. Carpenter ants will only have one node and no spines.
