Reminder that there actually was a Bernie analog on West Wing that was inserted solely to give the Sensible Centrists (king rear end in a top hat Toby, in this particular instance) someone other than Republicans to browbeat and ridicule for his impractical healthcare ideas which We Just Can't Afford Right Now, and though it's revealed he's got sympathetic personal reasons to advocate for single payer we're still supposed to write him off as deluded.

literally the only thing I remember from West Wing is that some guy was dying and begged somebody to make the superconducting supercollider happen and it was very touching and then they failed to get it because it would've cost too much for an endeavor that wasn't as certain to be profitable as others and then the episode just, ended
