The idw transformers author who introduced many cool world building concepts but was mostly known for canonizing the idea of "gay married transformers" that has had chuds crying and sobbing to this very day, months since the continuity he wrote for ended and a a reboot was launched, came from British transformers fanfic circles and hadn't really written anything else.

I'm not saying that writing fanfiction is some radical anti-captialist act, but pal, it's free consumption of art that by function can't be monitized. Barring some interesting things going on with people having tip jars up on their tumblr for their fanfic, ( and maybe patreon? ) - which the biggest, best archive won't let you advertise that you have such things.

The Wheel of Time suffered from a bloated slump to the extent that the original author died three-quarters of the way through its life-cycle. But after 23 years it was finally ended. ASOIAF also has taken 23 years and yet it's nowhere near done and its TV show got mocked when it ran out of book to cover. I can't really stomach GRRM anymore because he hasn't written a fun book in 20 years.

I guess I can understand why some people write fanfic, even though I hate the stuff, but why give it a Hugo? What’s next; are the Oscars going to start giving out awards to porn parody studios? Speaking personally, my ambition is to get a book published, but I’ve always been horrified by the thought of someone else writing in my world or with my characters. It’s like having someone break into your house and kick over all your furniture, especially if they add smut to something that didn’t have it originally. I suspect a lot of writers feel the same way, even if most of them don't want to say it outright in case they piss off fans and lose sales.

Speaking your story into the world makes your story exist inside other people besides yourself. So people are going to change the metaphorical carpret by just reading it and imaging what the charecters look like, let alone more radical interpretations of things.

Reminder The hugo is for the website itself, the archiving and storage methodlogy that allows things to be collected, curated and managed in an acessible way. Regardless of how you think of fanfic itself (which, gently caress off), the website itself is a marvel for collecting and storing work that would otherwise be lost to time.
