Bluk made a happy sound as it considered its surroundings! It snatched an old, wet sausage floating by with a single swipe of its tongue and cheerfully chewed on the morsel. It opened its maw as wide as it could and tried to fit itself over the Delicious Treat Pipe, but alas. The pipe was too big.

But the young garbage whelp didn't let that trifling fact get it down, it swam upstream, to find the source of the Treats.

12 - SPRYGG, Rank 0 Fey Hatchling

There was a warm place. It's gone now. Something broke, splitting the sky asunder, shattering the beatific perfection of obliviousness contained within eternal slumber. With increasing awareness of the massive world around her, Sprygg realized the urgency of hunger and the desperate fear of exposure. The Bloodwisdom dictated to her that the game of life was eat or be eaten, and Sprygg desperately wanted to live. Part of living meant knowing when to pick one's battles. Size was usually the best indicator of danger, but there were other signs and factors that one must always watch out for...

Sprygg's tufted ears pricked up at the sound of tiny chiming bells tinkling in her mind. Her senses - though they were still developing - were alert, and her tiny, barely cognizant thoughts were now racing. Her heart was pounding and she wanted to breathe normally but she also didn't want to freeze up entirely after hearing such a strange noise. What approached that could make such a sound? Sprygg sniffed the air, flaring her tiny nostrils.

The fey dragon hatchling realized she didn't know what it could possibly be, and she didn't like it!

Sprygg bolted from the rubble of the ruined statuary and weaved between the vine-choked marble colossi that lined her path, scrambling on all fours past the crumbling homunculi in a slippery serpentine slide.

Hello, yes! Is being very good day for posting, no?

1 – FLEX, Rank 0 Strength Hatchling

As the whispers of the Great Muscles Past faded from his mind, Flex exalted in his victory over the Egg. It had been hard, and it left him hungry, but if there was one thing Flex knew with certainty, it's that there was no gain without pain.

But something was wrong. Incomplete. Flex stretched carefully as he pondered the problem, snacking on a bug that happened to walk over his snout. The Great Muscles Past spoke no more. He would have to trust his own muscles to think it through, going back over all he could remember. One long heave against the eggshell. Then rest. Another long heave. Cracking. A breakthrough.

Of course! It was so simple. Flex got to his feet and braced himself against the walls of the log.

He still had a set left to do!

Bee Bonk
Feb 19, 2011

1 – FLEX, Rank 0 Strength Hatchling
The hatchling wriggles and flexes their body, trying to puff up and break free of the log by sheer strength and mass.
+Body trait: Muscular. +1 Power!
Smashing out of a punky log is perhaps a minor victory, but it is a first step along the road to ultimate power!

2-GUY, Rank 0 Flavor Hatchling
The stony shell is a long way from flavor country, but it has a certain chalky charm, once GUY gets used to having their mouth lacerated. It certainly gives their jaw a workout!
+Head trait: Strong Jaw. +1 Power!
Their erstwhile home sitting like a rock in their belly, the hatchling is now free to pursue broader culinary horizons.

3-HOD, Rank 0 Holy Hatchling
Shaking albumen from their wing membranes, HOD flaps into the sky. Immediately, their keen eyes hone in on the smallest of creatures creeping far below!
+Head trait: Sharp Eyes. +1 initiative!
A quick meal of a hapless rock vole, and HOD is feeling blessed!

4-BLUK, Rank 0 Garbage Hatchling
Hungry for more trash sausage, the hatchling drags itself upstream, struggling against the flow of the fouled water.
+Wings trait: Claws. +1 Power!
Sharp talons on their wing joints find purchase in the corroded pipe, and BLUK finds the promise of tasty garbage lends strength to their tiny body.

5-CHAD, Rank 0 Plutonium Hatchling
Quick as alpha decay, CHAD slithers up the stovepipe, finding their malleable hatchling body compacting to compensate for the tight confines
Body trait added: Streamline. +1 Speed!
Before anyone downstairs is any the wiser, the young dragon clambers free of the flue, to the freedom of Val-Scirra's rooftops!

6-OZ, Rank 0 Radiance Hatchling
In a spray of ore gravel, OZ charges out from under the cart, challenging the small gang of surprised Cacklers currently loafing around outside the mine. With an leering chuckle, one of the beastfolk tries to grab the small dragon, but a swipe of OZ's surprisingly dangerous tail sends it hopping back, clutching a mangled arm.
Tail trait added: Spikes. +1 Power!
The other Cacklers seem to find this hysterical, and descend into a frenzy of unhinged laughter for long enough for OZ to scamper to safety.

7-FI, Rank 0 Storm Hatchling
The fishers shout among themselves, each exhorting the other to deal with the strange, vicious serpent currently hissing and writhing upon the deck. A certain of their number, either enterprising or desperate, begins picking up and hurling anything at hand at the creature.
+1 Hoard!
Under a barrage of fish, buckets, billhooks and...what appears to be a valuable navigational instrument of some kind, FI takes to the waves. Their loss is FI's gain!

8-LLRYCH, Rank 0 Change Hatchling
Seizing the initiative, LLRYCH lets go of the walls of their rocky shelter and tumbles out into the open air!
Tail trait added: Fins. +1 Speed!
There is a moment of vertigo as they struggle to master the control of their new body and to overcome burgeoning panic, but a few stabilizing flicks of wing and tail find them sailing the air currents as if born to it (because they were!)

9-SYN, Rank 0 Parasite Hatchling
Defying convention wisdom, SYN inhales the entire clutch of eggs in a fit of gluttony, stashing them in pouches heretofor unknown to them, before (with difficulty) wriggling away.
+Neck trait: Sacs.
When the nest is finally torn open, the ovivorous beast is quite confused to find nothing but shells and disappointment.

10-LANG, Rank 0 Lethargy Hatchling
In no hurry, LANG stretches languidly, vertebrae popping and cracking for an alarmingly long time!
+Neck trait: Lengthen.
After a nice break, the young dragon discovers their height might allow them to see quite a bit more of their surroundings, but that seems like an awful imposition on their schedule.

11-KARL, Rank 0 Communism Hatchling
"What's all that faff got to do wif' me?
"Ye rotate your crops, right?"
"Aye, what of it?"
"Ye ken tha' times change. Needs change. Challenges appear. Preservin' our way o' life in the face o' tyranny, like drought or blight, requires new responses, an' that means collective action."
"Yer manure cart's well full, Lod."
+Horn trait: Antennae. +1 Initiative!
Chatter fills KARL's head, and it's all they can do to filter out the most inane of it.

12-SPRYGG, Rank 0 Fey Hatchling
Ancestral dreads spur the hatchling to flee, their sleek body slicing swiftly through the undergrowth.
Body trait added: Streamline. +1 Speed!
They dare not deal with such creatures without a stronger bargaining position, and for that, they must grow in power.

13-ZIN, Rank 0 Wind Hatchling
The hatchling does not surrender to the wind; they are the wind. Their body cuts the air like a scaly, shrieking knife.
+Body trait: Streamline. +1 Speed!
From this lofty height, all the lands and every creature upon them seem insignificant.

14-SEEK, Rank 0 Prophecy Hatchling
The hatchling cannot speak the truth of all, but they know this much: They do not die today. When the wetland terror thrusts its toothy snout into the mangrove, it finds only luckless crayfish.
+Tail trait: Fins. +1 Speed!
SEEK dives deep into the brackish murk, finned tail slicing water effortlessly. A cluster of water lilies provides shelter and sustenance, and the hatchling's mind soon returns to more ethereal matters.

15-BURR, Rank 0 Fur Hatchling
No sense wasting food; some protein should put hair on BURR's chest!
Horns changed: Mane. -1 Speed!
In fact, they can already feel it working! They're bloated with goat meat and their profile presents more wind resistance than before, but at least they're warm!

16-GOL, Rank 0 Resilience Hatchling
Instead of fleeing like some lizard from the sun's glare, GOL instead takes strength from it.
+Head trait: Armor. +1 Armor!
They remain unmolested; it would seem no foes have any desire to brave the forbidding elements, and in fact find that the hard scutes covering their head have cured; hardening significantly!

17-KA, Rank 0 Hate Hatchling
With all the ferocity their tiny body can muster, KA snarls and lunges at the hulking beast, smashing into one elephantine leg with surprising force.
Horn trait added: Enlarge. +1 Fear!
The armored hulk of a beast seems taken aback and unsettled by the tiny creature's ferocity, and takes a few thunderous steps away before continuing to sift through ash drifts with its great tusks.

18-KHR , Rank 0 Crystal Hatchling
Squeezing muscles they only instinctually knew they have, KHR, wiggles their flashing bioluminescent lure in what they hope is a friendly gesture!
Head traits added: Lure. +1 initiative!
The fish don't react quite as hoped; the light show appears to stun them! With a rippling shrug, KHR gobbles up the unexpected fishy feast and swims on.

Exploration: After an exhausting time spent slipping and weaving through the thick undergrowth in her sleek and slender form, all longing thoughts of the warm and earthy place she'd once hatched from slowly retreated from the forefront of Sprygg's mind. Her entire remembered existence thus far in the world had been spent in fearful flight from an unknown threat, and so Sprygg continued to run just to be absolutely certain that she was safe. The fey dragon hatchling would have no immediate need to return to the statuary of her birthplace - not in her current state at least, not so long as the place was crawling with... whatever it was that made that chiming ring in her ears.

Sprygg pressed her tufted ears back as she slunk through the brush, listening intently for the sounds of any pursuers. Just thinking of those strange tinkling tones from before set Sprygg's mind towards thinking all sorts of strange ideas, bringing up colorful ancestral memories of magical enchantments that splashed briefly across her mind's eye like half-finished paintings. She continued running her course, if only to give herself something strenuous to do with her body to help keep her mind off the matter of fear.

First and foremost, Sprygg had to find herself a lair!

Just as she had hurriedly twisted her way out of a tangled thicket of brush, Sprygg suddenly found herself staring face to face with a small-but-smart bugling: a Gubbin.

Sprygg froze in place, sitting stock-still as she stared down at the diminutive beastfolk squarely in its black, beady eyes. Sprygg's bright, glistening eyes betrayed her surprise - she'd been discovered by this Gubbin with her guard down!

The boisterous red-headed grub-person stood up on its prolegs and waved a lustrous metal scepter in its foreclaw before charging straight at her!

But here there were trees for pull-ups, fallen branches to bench, boulders for... well, boulders for worming towards as a long term goal. Too much weight could lead to joint injuries, after all.

It was in his search for a proper branch for some moonlit squats that Flex happened on a pair of large, meaty squirrels, viciously eviscerating the corpse of a rabbit. It was... they were...

They were the perfect size and shape!

Flex surged forward, snagging a squirrel in each claw before they had a chance to react. They struggled to free themselves, to bite and rend his flesh, to find breath, but his grip was just too strong. As he began his routine--three sets of twenty squirrel curls per arm--his prey slowly expired.

Bloodwisdom might have cautioned the little whelp to smash or eat the eggs. Common dragon sense would have Khr enslave the sleeping children, to rightfully elevate it to Ruler of the Mere, but Khr had neither of these things for it was infused with Crystal Thought.

Thus enlightened with clarity of purpose, Khr began to swim amongst the many corpses of the diseased, polishing them with its sleek body, shining them with its lure and pushing them into positions both amusing and in line with the ley, as only a small excitable dragon could see it.

5 - CHAD
Hoard: 1

Chad looked at the two Humes and at the shiny thing. The first was a chump, easily manipulated. The second was powerful, Chad could grow strong living with such a Hume but probably wouldn't have control. The shiny was shiny, but just taking it would probably make them angry.

B

In the end, a Chad could only be happy in the presence of other Chads.

Stretches, walking, and scaring off a rude Goosen was far more effort than Lang wanted to spend in one day. Wait, was it still the same day? Eh, didn't really matter, Lang was tired now. Still, just flopping over the stump risked yet another rude encounter waking him up later, and being woken up from a nap is the worst feeling ever. So Lang spends just a little more effort in order to B. Burrow into the roots of the stump, giving him a good-enough shelter to finally take a nap in.

C. Tries to latch onto the Wretch and take a ride!

Syn hunches low against the ground as they trail the crone and her mount, approaching from their blind spot. Syn tries to match their speed as it closes the distance. The hatchling launches itself lightly towards the wretch's back, splaying itself in mid-air and trying to wrap itself around the pathetic creature's unoccupied flesh.

YESSSSS. This felt right. This felt like a lair. Syn had grown fuzzy on the details since the Bloodwisdom faded, but they thought lairs were supposed to be bigger. Ah well.

As the mount tries to reach back at the disturbance Syn wants to growl but its instincts scream to blend in and hide its true nature. Instead it tightens sharp claws against the mount's sides and hopes to be mistaken for the spurring of the crone's sharp knees, giving the mount a poke whenever it misbehaves.
