It's a combination behind the appeal of LPs as easily digested imagery of a game without the attention or focus cost of gameplay, parasocial relationships for nerds who want to do D&D but don't/won't/can't do them IRL, and easily and cheaply produced for anyone with a good mic and access to a computer. Combine that with the community-ish good vibes of online fandoms and subcultures and they're gonna be popular in the era of toddlers raised on tablets. Welcome to the cybernetic future, second life is real now.

I never played D&D growing because it was SATANIC but I watched a bit of one of these videos and it is exceedingly slow and boring, I don't see the appeal if you aren't directly participating yourself. But whatever, interpersonal relationships are weird as hell now
