If VAR radioed down and said "I'm recommending a review" and Elfath said "No", he's going to get in a lot of crap for that. Brych got sent home from the World Cup for it. Elfath was at the U20 World Cup earlier this summer, which while it's not a super high level competition it's a FIFA competition that runs in part as an audition for a future World Cup for referees. I'd bet a lot of money it has been drilled into his head that "If VAR says go look, go look." Maybe I'm wrong here and Elfath really did tell the VAR to piss off. But he clearly indicated that VAR was doing a check and then didn't go to the monitor. The most likely thing to have happened here was that VAR told him "check complete". And if he was told all was good, why in the world would he then go off to the monitor anyway?

I mean LBDD did something similar for the LA game at audi field recently and it felt genuinely horrible and all they did was not drum, chants died, people got mad and started chanting "we want drums". I imagine with no chants or songs at all it must feel way more awkward and uncomfortable
