Yep. That will do it.

I throw the breaker for my well pump whenever the house is empty for several days. I'd just shut off the main if I had city water.

It's a pain in the rear end but I'd seen this too much. And once before I did that as a practice I had the pressure line of my shallow well pump break and spray water all over the (fortunately unfinished) basement for a few days so this is pretty cemented into my mind.

This is not an endorsement as I don't have one yet. But it was in the flyer for this month and very tempting from a risk management perspective. I wonder and hope there's an insurance discount for having one.

I consider it an essential part of the routine of leaving, just like ensuring all the windows & doors are locked. Anything more than 24 hours, and the water is getting shut off.

It's surprising to me that insurance companies don't work with one of those auto water leak sensor/shutoff devices (FloLogic and Moen Flo are 2 of the best) to heavily subsidize the price. It's one of the most common HO insurance claims, and one of those auto-detection devices could mean the difference between a few gallon annoyance cleanup (<$2000) and a house-destroying disaster that goes into the 5-6 figures for remediation.

How's living in Roseville now? I grew up as a teenager there (hated it) and moved out and never really went back. Any better as an adult / home owner?

It's cheaper than Sunnyvale - where I lived before, but with a horrible, horrible long summer. :newlol:

Since all my HVAC poo poo/insulation/windows are new and Roseville Electric is freaking awesome my usage during the summer is at most 1050 kw and around $150 which is totally reasonable for summer.

I'm old now (51) and I've lived in Sunnyvale/SF/Burlingame/San Mateo/Oakland in the past back to mid-1990's and grew up all over California. I came out here in 2010 to buy a house when I only had to be in an office in Pleasanton or Oakland 3 days per week, then 2 days per week and now only 1 day per week. I would move back if I had to make the awful drive or Amtrak slog every single day (which a ton of people do now). However, I missed the buy a house in Walnut Creek or something window to move back to the Bay Area around 2013 before it went insane everywhere. Oh well.

I turn off most of the circuits in my house when I leave for more than a few days. Obviously the fridge is left on but the bedrooms don't need power, the difference is small but enough for me to do it anyway

Yeah the master valve in my house is a pain in the rear end to get to. If I ever have a house built all that poo poo is going to be super accessible.

And the drat bathroom won't be on the opposite side of the loving house from the hot water heater.

I finished installing my bathroom fan today and holy hell is attic work miserable in 100+ temps. I had a mask on for insulating the ductwork and I ended up saturating the mask with so much sweat I couldn't breath through it anymore. I didn't want to take it off because of the insulation in the air so when I finally got out of there I was coughing and gasping for air.

I knew to stay hydrated but I didn't think to worry about suffocating.

Getting really close! I promise the speakers are level / will be leveled, the ceiling has a slant to it. I am really excited that it's all coming together.

I ended up having to do anything in my attic early in the morning after running the whole house fan all night.

Here's a couple of pictures of what has to be the most efficient bathroom fan installation ever. It only has to move air like 24 inches to outside.

Insulation installation was a clusterfuck. The only insulation I could find was made for like 12" ducts so I cut it in half and then into strips. Getting it around and taped was a nightmare and it looks pretty awful but it should be very well insulated, even if it looks like garbage.

For starters the TV mount is way too high. It should be at eye level when you're sitting down.

Ok. I'm going to verify levelness tomorrow (I just saw this stuff late friday.) The bubble on the TV mount is level, so it's just the speakers to verify. Shoved into a corner is a necessity due to the size of the room and what else we need to cram in there. This is a "hobby room" / Office which is also getting a TV so we can watch bad television mindlessly from across the room, not our living room. Our old TV is going in there an a new Goon TV Thread Peer Pressure Approved TV is going in our living room, crammed into a corner.

The reason I ask is the contractors are still working on finish details, so if something is obviously hosed that I'm missing now is the time as they can fix it.

Goons get massively triggered by elevated TV mounts for some reason. Stiff neck facets from being at a computer 17 hours a day, I suppose.

Most Normies have their TV off to the side in a living room because it's not the focal point of the room. That room looks like a bog standard living room to me!

So that all your seating is facing both the fireplace and the TV! But those setups are often using a crappy gas "fire"place which are silly little things to begin with. Give me wood burning or go to HELLL

Probably where the piano is, or another room entirely. I get it that in some homes the "family room" has been designed by someone to leave only the area above the fireplace as the most aesthetically pleasing choice for TV placement, but it's still just a terrible spot to put it for comfortable viewing. It hurts my neck and eyes to have to look up that high for a prolonged period of time. Plus I'm sure the heat and smoke is just great for electronics.

To be fair it's not a TV that gets used all that much, and the piano gets far more use. But like GGGC said, if you put it somewhere else you are now changing the focal point of the seating area away from the fireplace. In which case I guess you don't care about fireplaces, and that's fine.

Bonus double fireplace:

You can also just as easily get a mount that allows you to swing the TV down lower and put it back up when not viewing. My TV isn't above a fireplace but its high up because my living room has high chair molding, so it's on one of these:

I'm not sure what the problem is. Mine is over the fireplace, I have to move my eyes upward slightly. Somehow I live with it.

Leperflesh
May 17, 2007

Basically all ergnomic specialists say that puts strain on your neck and shoulders. If you usually only watch TV for one hour and mostly do other things, then it's probably fine. If you tend to binge through netflix shows or watch a lot of sports or whatever, several hours of viewing a screen well above eye level is bad for your body.

Given there's options, such as the mount mentioned before, or even just getting a smaller TV that will fit somewhere else in the room, why not avoid the health impact?
