I know it's not the reason for sharing, but the blocking of that scene is bothering me. Is Joker trying to stanch the bleeding on a throat wound?

Those two issues really capture a lot of what bothers me about modern Joker stories. They're having a little jokey conversation between themselves in a pile of rubble that used to be a church, where Joker walked in and killed every single person at a wedding for no particular reason. They are surrounded on all sides by dead, innocent civilians.

There is nothing that connects one scene to the next. You may as well have pulled random lines from a hat for all this makes sense. It reads like that thing that teachers in Japan will do where they'll print out web or newspaper comics with the text removed, and let their students write in what they want. Except those are usually more coherent!

Johnny Aztec posted:You know, I'm not trying to be " MANGA BAD! " but really, what in the hell is this? I don't know what this manga is but it's very clear to me? Panel 1: Three people are having dinner, one of them enthusiastically proposes a toast and the other two join in, albeit a little hesitantly or awkwardly, which I gather from the beads of sweat on their heads, and their stammer. Panel 2: The man and the woman-- I'm guessing the guests of the third guy, exchange a silent glance that acknowledges the awkwardness of the situation, whatever it stems from. The woman is apologetic about the whole thing and the man is understanding, and looks like he understands that they're doing their best in a weird situation. I imagine that knowing more about the manga in question would explain more. Panel 3: One of the two guests asks the other guy-- Atsumi?-- his opinion on popular mangas. Maybe he's an editor or an artist? Either way it reads to me like the kind of semi-awkward professional question you ask someone you're not especially close to but want to make conversation with. Panel 4: Atsumi thinks about it without expressing much interest or seeming to pick up on the two guest's awkwardness-- someone else lobs a few examples that I imagine allude to very popular contemporary mangas. I'd bet the "stretchy arms" one is One Piece and I don't know what the giant one would be. It would be like, in the US, two guests asking someone in the comics industry asking what the top sellings comics are and asking something like "you know, maybe Spider-Man, Batman?" Basically guessing at stuff that has a broad pop culture presence. Panel 5: Atsumi gives a deadpan, very intense look and turns the question on its head by providing a crass, direct answer that hinges on a common gag or visual tic rather than providing a concrete title. Again, one can imagine localizing the joke along these lines: Friend: So what are the most popular comics? The X-Men? Justice League? Editor: Hmm. The one with the skimpy costumes and gratuitous violence. It's not a particularly sophisticated joke but it's also not, to me, at all a confusing one, and I think even if the blocking is a little sparse the scenario is communicated well and the guy's laconic face in the last panel is pretty funny.

Crowetron posted:If I start reading Eyeshield 21 and this turns out to be a visual metaphor, I'm gonna be so pissed. Sadly it is a visual metaphor. But it's the kind of visual metaphor that comes up a lot. Now Eyeshield 21 is a great manga. It's a manga about kids learning how to play American Football. And as someone who has never lived in the States, it was a great way to learn how the game is played. Plus you get visual metaphors to explain how things work involving trains, Panthers, cowboys, the god Poseidon and slaves revolting against the Egyptians.

Eyeshield is also drawn by Yusuke Murata, who later went on to do the redrawn One-Punch Man manga. E21 is his earlier work, doesn't have as much polish as some of the stuff he's been doing in OPM, but there's still that same dynamism to the posing and angles, as well as an exaggeration of action. By reading, you will come to believe that all these American football players are 10 feet tall, rippling with muscles, and can leap thirty feet in the air on demand, despite all of them being high schoolers. Exhibit A: a teenager The writing isn't quite as good as the art, and the ending is super rushed because it got cancelled (they have to wrap up the world tournament in about 10 chapters), but it's a fun read.

By reading, you will come to believe that all these American football players are 10 feet tall, rippling with muscles, and can leap thirty feet in the air on demand, despite all of them being high schoolers. So my biggest problem with the ending was in the final arc (which is the best of the US kids versus the best of Japan kids. And yes one of the US star players is the son of the President.) There was a mysterious mummy who played for the Japanese team. Abd his identity is a mystery but he's put on the team without tryouts because the coach vouches for him and insists he's good enough to be on the team. And while I wont spoil his identity (not least because it wont make sense to people who haven't read it) when he does play he keeps loving up and costing his team valuable plays. It honestly felt like the reason he was put on the team to play was that his super skill was to be so bad at playing that all his other teammates had to play even better, just to make up for him.
