I had 3" of water inside my house in SC last year when Florence dumped 29" of rain in 24 hours, began preparations today.

If you're anywhere within 150mi of the coast between FL and NC go get some bottled water and canned food now before anyone starts paying real attention.

I was in Wrightsville Beach for a job interview just before that hurricane landed, and lived in Wilmington for the previous few years. gently caress that hurricane. I get mad and weepy just thinking about the hurricane flags flying on Wrightsville a week before, let alone going on a Team Rubicon deployment to a place I'd adopted as my home after getting out of the army. From everything that I've read, it seems it's more that they did well in spite of him, and Labour might have won enough seats to head up a coalition government if he weren't at the helm. Someone better versed than me in UK politics might offer a different take, though.

From everything I've read it's less Corbyn himself and more the idea of Corbyn, given he's a Bernie Sanders-type "hey socialism is actually cool" outsider politician that managed to become head of the party, leading everyone to freak the gently caress out about what he would do when in power. And while a different head of the Labour party might be marginally more successful at putting together a coalition against the Tories, Labour in general isn't exactly much more competent than US Democrats at things like "attracting votes to not commit national suicide"

Of course, I could be completely wrong, but that's the take I've gotten.

It's extra hosed because the leave/remain split hardly aligns with the parties at all and something like 30-40% of Labor wants to leave, the biggest issue right now is that Boris is in true conservative style hell-bent on doing it in the stupidest most destructive way possible just as a flex.

Not that there's any other way it could be done that wouldn't also be catastrophic.

Would a hard Brexit be the final kick to jump-start this recession everyone is scared of? Seems like things would always take a dive just before, then settle out once the brits had managed to finagle more time (until next time).

 who knows what is gonna push the AZ-5 button and kaboom the reactor but UK crashing out of the EU and reverting to WTO trade rules overnight without any kind of cushion might do it, given the prominence of London as an internal financial center.

She's the senator for wall street that tried to pretend she was a leftist but whose first step was to go and talk to a bunch of hedge funds and banks asking for their permission to run.

She also was the one who said Franken should resign for his gross sexual assault jokes, which was good but probably also a cynical ploy for MeToo voters.

Corbyn has a lot wrong with him, but it isn't being "too far left." He's basically a less politically savvy leftist Johnson, right down to being a Brexiter, misunderstanding international affairs, being cool with totalitarian governments.

Flying tonight at 0400 into it. 5 day forecasts are still not accurate enough - they can be off by 1-200 miles. That being said, it’s going to smack in the east coast of Florida somewhere, probably as a major.

It’s going to run through warm water and moist air as it crosses the Bahamas and nears the US, so it’ll intensify as it comes in.

By Friday the forecast should be pretty accurate. That same NHC page has charts that show the wind speed probability for your area and earliest possible arrival times of wind. Expect flooding and stuff as well.

NOAA is also one of those agencies that still doesn’t have an administrator. They tried to put up that accuweather guy that wanted to privatize the weather service for it, but I think he was involved in some “me too” stuff.
