Quavers posted:"Around 57 minutes in Chris Roberts pops up to talk about Squadron 42 specifically. There’s more than 60 missions in there, 340 speaking characters, 1,255 pages of dialogue – it’s big, is the general message, as large as any triple-A production with cast quality to rival Hollywood. This is also when he announces the delay, pointing out the scope of the campaign has grown significantly since announcement. They were planning to show off a mission at CitizenCon that was fully finished – most are still at “grey box or better” as Roberts put it, where they know where everything is going and the balance is done but not all the effects are in – but they didn’t quite get it finished." I notice there's not one word spoken about the gameplay... "340 characters" "1255 pages of dialogue" "cast quality to rival Hollywood" That's how you poorly hype a film, not a game.

That's not what immersion means. That's called "watching a movie" and it's the exact opposite of immersion.

An outrageous single player campaign is what was originally promised with this poo poo show from the beginning. I wanted a next-gen Wing Commander, which means 1200 pages of dialog actually makes sense. Will never get that now though.

Most of my knowledge comes from the Sunk Cost Galaxy series, but I believe he was the main force behind all of the first one, wasn't very involved in the second, and for the third and fourth he concentrated entirely on directing the FMV sections and left the game portion to others. He clearly always wanted to make movies more than games and still does.

But they're poorly paced, poorly written, moderately well acted, and they've aged like crap. Most notably to me is that Star Citizen's story is exactly the same as Wing Commander's. Beat for beat, the only thing he changed was the alien names. Even the planned spaceship upgrades are basically identical. And WC wasn't even a new story, Chris largely stole it from Larry Niven's Man-Kzin Wars in the first place. Stop me if you've heard this one before: there's a race of aliens with a noble warrior culture, and they hate us! For some reason they are engaging us in a series of planet-hopping wars, like islands in the Pacific in WW2. Also for some reason we operate fighters and carriers exactly like that same campaign in WW2. Also also also, our brave military is super cool and good and rugged and handsome but they lose every battle because the enemy is just super duplicitous, but then it comes down to a lone fighter jock and he manages to turn back the tide! Only to be betrayed from within by *gasp* an evil admiral! Exiled from home and forced to fight on two fronts, he wins a stalemate in the war and is marked as a figure of great respect among his enemies. Sprinkle with some or all of the following: * A secret jump route that runs STRAIGHT TO EARTH OMG * An alien superweapon that must be stopped * A human superweapon that must either be built, defended, or destroyed, depending on which arc of the campaign you are in * A sidekick from the savage alien warrior race who works alongside you * Evil warrior-race politicians who subvert everything noble and good about the species and must be murdered * Lots of Top Gun references because the US Navy is just the loving coolest thing of all time holy poo poo * A sense of military tactics and technology that has not evolved since 1945

Assuming CIG is not just loving making this poo poo up.

Rotten Red Rod posted:I mean, were the Wing Commander FMVs any good either? Or were they just novel? I never played those games, but I'm going to assume the quality of the movie was pretty much predicted by those. They're comedy good, but honestly FMV from that time was only comedy good and mainly stood out for the same reason that the term "multimedia" exists. I remember being blown away by pixelated videos the size of a playing card being shown on my computer screen and having a big production value (relatively) video in WC3 almost made it worth the literal 15-minute load times on my 486. While all the attention gets paid to the hollywood actors/budget on WC3+4, that was only because he finally could. WC1+2 featured plenty of barely-interactive talking and cutscenes that would have certainly been done the same had the tech and money existed at the time. The crobbler was desperately trying to make movies even when you had giant pixels and 256 colors and had to buy a secondary set of floppies to get voiced lines. One of the periphery things about SC that has always tickled me is that "I identify as a captial-G Gamer" types are following a messiah who doesn't give a poo poo about video games and just sees their chosen medium as an easy stepping stone to get (back) into movies.

Honestly, in any sane universe they would have just laser focused on SQ42 from the start. Used that to make the basic gameplay fun as hell, get the flight model nailed on etc. They can also use that project to start building assets, to start building lore, start building the universe. Then when SQ42 is done, start to build Star Citizen by reusing the flight model etc. Doing it the other way around ("we're building an MMO, and the single player is a gimped version of that running on your local machine!") is just insane, and it's extremely loving telling that 8 years on they still haven't even gotten the flight model to a decent place.

I mean they obviously spend zero time on s design document to work with and for years their laser focus was on outputting cool cutscenes in order to sell jpegs to gullible people and figuring new "stretch goals" and features to promise to keep the hype going. Their whole development is backwards, and not in the way that "hey maybe a top-down approach could also work?" but in an intended "dazzle the PC Master race dolts with detailed models and seemingly innovative development terms (see bad use of compiling, refactoring, pipe lines, feature locked), figure out the rest later". Yeah, no wonder their roadmaps read as a spaghetti nightmare from day one --which they published years into development and quite obviously not the first one they ever made, but one that was composed by a person who only barely knew what the gently caress their were doing.
