Also there is a vast array of cameras, sensors and alarms that track your eye movement, hand movement, etc. to make sure you're not falling asleep or eating while driving and they are on a hair trigger so if you reach up to pick your nose like 10 different alarms start screaming at you.

Probably just half a self-driving rig. The entire trucking industry is almost at the end of its road, anyways. They will be at the forefront of the automation revolution here shortly.

it absolutely is. not only that, when you go to register it’s kind of hard to tell whether it’s asking you to put in your name or what you want for a twitter handle so you can very easily end up with the Frank626383 type handle without even realizing it and they don’t let you change it.

if you're an owner-operator you're probably doing fine overall

if you don't have a couple hundred grand to start out you're going to be one of the most exploited class of people in this country right now, finance has gotten extremely good at making truck leases a net loss for everybody involved but themselves, and then just before the truck is paid off they'll gently caress ya somehow and repo it lmao

It is mostly that is one of the few industries where having a big beard and carrying a knife isn't going to offend anyone.

And like so many other immigrant communities that get into niche industries, that Sikh with a dozen trucks is only hiring other Sikhs, and they are part of a religious community that will help each others families out while they are on the road.

They also tend to do things like pool resources so someone can buy a truck as opposed to get a long/as large of a loan from a bank. Immigrants are very aggressive and entrepreneurial, they are more likely to start small businesses and just generally are better than "natural-born" citizens.

the whole NY Medallion racket is insane.

So to be a nyc cabbie you either had to work for a cabbie company or have a medallion. there is a lottery to get one and once you have one drivers will line up to rent it from you because then their fares don't go to the company they get to keep all of it.

It got to the point it got so hard to get a medallion you could "rent" yours out for a few grand a month (like 2-4 grand depending) or you could just drive the cab yourself and make your normal fares and work whenever you wanted.

like a lot of economic policy, it was put into place without really thinking through all the consequences. Once it was in place and well understood, there were many people who were benefitting from the status quo who advocated to keep it from changing. Ride-sharing has probably helped consumers (mostly, it's definitely hurt disabled people), but it hurt taxi-drivers and made it so that companies could theoretically reap better profits.

There were much better overall solutions available, but there was no-one really advocating for them, and so in a capitalist democracy, that means they don't get implemented.

And to bring it full circle to the Trump administration, Michael "The Fixer" Cohen had around 10 medallions and lost his rear end borrowing against them:

The ride-sharing concept is awesome, some ad-hoc carpooling for gas money on trips that someone was planning on making anyway.
The reality of bootleg taxis is less awesome.

Unfortunately you can't really decouple these two - you're going to get the second happen by virtue of the first being allowed to happen. It's like AirBNB, you can "claim" that you're just renting out spare rooms on your free time but in reality it's going to lead to people buying up condos and renting them out full time. Perhaps you could halt this behavior by making companies only allow people rent out <x> percent of the time or whatever.
