One of the problems is that it's not a codified ideology like Marxism-Leninism, it's more a general grouping for "non-ML communists who emerged around the same time as Lenin." There's specific tendencies that get grouped into leftcom though, like council communism (society should be run by local worker councils that coordinate into giant recursive stacks of councils of councils of councils) or Luxembourgism (I haven't read any Luxembourg but I know it's a thing), and Rev Left could have spent more time on that.

Serf posted:council communism just sounds like the stuff i hear anarchists propose, or like a non-trade centered syndicalism Pretty much, though most syndicalism is industry centred and not broken up by trade. Council Communist theorists are people like Pannekoek, Otto Ruhle Karl Korsch and Paul Mattick Snr (he's son is still alive and active but seems to be drifting in a weird direction) oh and Mark Shipway. A lot of them eventually came to accept that their ideas owed a lot to anarchists or they had come to the same conclusions. Mattick was in the IWW. The other major Left Communist grouping was the followers of Amadeo "the worst thing about Fascism is Anti-Fascism" Bordiga*. Though personally I've never been able to figure out what makes them "left" the man openly dreamed of a totalitarian society (in his own words) of experts and wanted to destroy the individual completely. And most of the groups that broke off from him haven't done much better unless they jacked his ideas in completely. Honestly I can't think of a very good thing to say about them, the modern parties still around split like the Trotskyists, denounce everyone else for selling out and they interpret everything to suit their own particular fractions narrow views. The most famous "Bordigist" to English speakers is probably Giles Dauve, but he stopped being one in I think the 70s. *He was the leader of the Italian Communist Party during the rise of Mussolini, not only did he not commit the party to opposition to the Blackshirts he expelled party members who did join groups that opposed the Fascists like the Arditi del Popolo.

Serf posted:sure (tho their argument was that that book says the opposite of what most people think it does) but what do left communist believe that's different from other communists? Usually it's broadly defined as "anything to the left of lenin". Leftcom as an ideology is basically a group of ideologies defined by what it isn't (leninism, maoism, trotskyism) as much as any positions they hold. In practice it's usually used by communists who don't want to be associated with leninism for a myriad of reasons. They reject the idea of a vanguard party in favor of a more decentralized mass uprising. They also don't like ml states tendency to centralize political power under the communist party apparatus. Ancoms & councilists are usually what leninists are referring to when they speak of left wing communists.

It's a weird accident of history that he's associated with leftcoms it doesn't make coherent sense.

It's a weird accident of history that he's associated with leftcoms it doesn't make coherent sense. Its not an accident, Bordiga positioned himself as part of the "Italian left" and nearly every modern site or publication using the Leftcom or "Internationalist Communist" name will be run by a Bordigist party or a party that grew out of the Bordigist current. Your right the term doesn't make coherent sense, but the term was just a term of abused applied by the Communist party of the Soviet Union to describe their critics with the Communist movement. Trotskyists were often derided as Left deviationists, ultra lefts and leftcoms too, and many of what we call Leftcoms like Bordiga were first accused of Trotskyist politics.

Sestak claiming China doesn't forgive debts while the IMF & World Bank do is insane. Debt forgiveness only became a trend among Western lenders because China was willing to forgive debts in the Third World during the aughties, but especially Cuba's. If western lenders weren't willing to forgive any third world debt, but especially African debts, then China would be sought out as the primary source of financing.

yeah he doesn't seem like a bad guy in a lot of ways, most of his positions seem decent for a democrat, but he's got a great big ideological blind spot on geopolitics. Matt's question on why China ignores the UN, IMF etc was on point too. those are anglo world institutions. China will respect and reinforce them when they start doing what China wants.

He only slightly deviates on Iran, and that's purely because as an admiral he has an operational understanding of why it's a bad idea.

Serf posted:sure (tho their argument was that that book says the opposite of what most people think it does) but what do left communist believe that's different from other communists? stealing a post: "leftcoms", or left communists, are ostensible communists who have such beautiful souls that they simply cannot engage with trade unions (reactionary) or do electoral work (bourgeoise) or work with the peasantry (backwards) or impose the dictatorship of the proletariat through the vehicle of a worker's state (authoritarian) or basically do anything but explain at length why every instance of actually-existing socialism is, actually, doing it wrong, and in reality an example of state capitalism/bureaucratic collectivism/degeneration/asiatic despotism. lenin wrote a long pamphlet on this topic called "left-wing communism, an infantile disorder". trotsky headed the "left opposition" in the ussr before he was exiled
