I'm not making a sweeping statement about suicide, but Alec's suicide specifically was a cowardly selfish act that has done irreparable harm to people who he had already done severe harm to. It permanently marks Zoe and the Bensons as targets for the loving gamergate chuds who were already after them because of his lovely behavior, and capsizes their lives and careers. I'm not glad he killed himself, I'm angry as hell. gently caress that guy.

yes, but also you assume that those types of people wouldn't find some other reason to portray their targets as literal satan.

it's like trying to debunk someone's racism. the moment you dismantle one of their talking points, they find another one. they're not interested in being proven wrong and changing their thoughts on it, they're just interested in finding an excuse they can shove forward for their hatred. if it wasn't this, it'd be something else.

It's not about the morons pushing the narrative, it's about how easy it is for them to grow their numbers and get each other baying for blood. Alec just handed the chuds some primo red meat.

Turns out, Trump telling people that he's gonna build roads is really appealing to people when they literally don't have paved roads. Kushner came to a local college, even.

I forgot that the hundreds of brown people who are being murdered simply because they walked over a border without a piece of paper are less important than steamrolling over nature for a couple of hillbillies who think that black people are savages and that we should still own slaves.

Poor people are fine, but poor people who see an rich white man who is going to gently caress them over AGAIN and think that he's going to save their asses because they believe anything as long as it's on fox news and then blame the non-white people for it when they DO end up getting are just as bad as the rich who deserve an guillotine.

They are no different than the people who assumed that Jewish people were the reason why the economy was bad in 1930's germany.

being poor literally destroys your brain, it is longform torture that permanently destroys the capacities of people who are subjected to it. i cant blame people for that situation for being pliable to conspiracy theories. what the gently caress else do they have. it doesn't absolve them of anything but they aren't 'as bad' as the people pushing those things onto them, or the ones that keep them poor.

and fyi the rich white woman or the rich black man will gently caress you over just as hard.

No, I don't mean 'low IQ,' i mean it gives you trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder.

What they're talking about is the (AFAIK pretty well-demonstrated) fact that being poor and dealing with the stresses it places on you saps a sufficient amount of energy that your mental functioning is impaired in several ways (as stress is known to do). This does not mean 'poor people are stupid' - it means that a lack of money is an even greater disadvantage than one might think on the surface level. It's an extra argument against bullshit bootstrapper rhetoric.

Actually, there have been scientific studies that show potentially that growing up in severe poverty can affect brain development. Most likely as a result of malnutrition, substandard sanitation, etc.

Plus the early childhood trauma that comes as both a direct consequence (uncertainty over whether or not you'll get to eat, where you'll live, what you'll wear) and indirect consequence (seeing your parents stressed/arguing, not being able to enjoy the same things your peers do)

Pretty much. Poverty has a lot of sub-effects that would almost certainly have an affect on brain development and quality of life into adulthood. Both physical (malnutrition and the such), and mental (trauma).

It's one of my favorite games of all time. In my opinion, it does story telling better than any other game I've ever played. The story is compelling and it has a great cast of likable characters.

It's not so much a game as it's an interactive story-telling medium. There is no failure in the traditional sense of a video game. No matter how poorly you do on any task, the game just keeps going forward.

Anyway, Night in the Woods is a very good game. Great dialogue, great characters, compelling story, and, yeah, an excellent soundtrack (goddammit Holowka). You can tell the game came from a really personal place based heavily on the writers' experiences, and it really resonantes because of that (Especially if you've grown up in or near dying post-industrial towns like Possum Springs).

Honestly, one of the worst things about this whole... thing that's happened over the past week or so is that it will likely discourage people from getting the game, which is just an incredible shame since while it turned out Holowka was a gently caress, the other creators are good people and made one hell of a game.

The news has been pretty upsetting me. There's been a lot of people who have turned out to be monsters, but, it's like, whatever. I enjoyed Louis CK Comedy and Kevin Spacy films, but like, whatever. Not watching their stuff any more is no big deal. With pretty much every person for whom MeToo has exposed, cutting their stuff out is no problem. Very little of it had any real effect on me.

But Night in the Woods is a game I could replay over and over, and I listen to the music from it all the time. It's perfect music to put on while relaxing and working on something. I connected with the story in a real way. Something I love and cherish has been tainted and I don't know if I can ever enjoy it the same again.

But I'm going to try.

I just have to make it personal. Without spouting "Death of the Author" into the heavens, I'm going to enjoy Night in the Woods for what it meant to me. It helped me through a really rough patch last year during my first year of teaching. It helped me wrap my head around a lot of things that had been swirling around me during that chaotic time and continues to help me to this day. The soundtrack is so good and so iconic to the game that it feels impossible to separate it. I can simply say that they come from a troubled person with awful allegations attached to them that will never get some kind of resolution. It sucks even more now that the ghouls are out, desperate to use it to score some kind of points.

Everything about this sucks cause it's tied to a property that comes from a very personal space. That said, the game is still great and the points it makes are still impactful and valuable. Finding Bea is still a great track. The fan art/animations that came out with this game are still great. I'm just going to focus on those good things.

Man, I hope this makes sense cause I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around all of this. I despise this shameful aspect of "gamer" culture and this is legitimately the last game I want wrapped up in that ugly, shallow world.

If Night In The Woods is still meaningful to you, go ahead and enjoy it. The message of the game doesn't support (and often outright rejects) anything Holowka did, and buying it won't support him at this point, financially or morally.

It's totally valid to feel like you can't enjoy the game because it's so closely tied to this issue, but it's not an ethical dilemma, and there's no need to feel bad about enjoying it despite everything.

In my opinion the game is still good despite recent events, you just have to kind of try to separate the two as much as you can (and this wouldn’t be the first time I’ve enjoyed someone’s work despite them being kind of lovely on a personal level).

The game still means a great deal to me. I played it right around a time that I needed it. It's a game I wish to experience again.

With regards to Holowka, my biggest struggle is, again, the music, as that was mostly his. But the writing, visual aesthetic, etc. were not. So I see no reason not to enjoy the game for what it is.

While people will inevitably co-opt the message of this game to fit whatever angry narrative they choose to, it's only via abject stubbornness and willful ignorance that they can gloss over it's very overt criticism of capitalism, boomer culture and untenable societal expectations that impacts those who are marginalized more than anyone else.

I think the most important moment in NitW is the bit where Mae has a massive fight with her mom where some horrible poo poo gets said and the game just continues from there. They don't resolve it at the end of the fight, they don't have some closure later where the issues brought up are fixed. It's not a sign that either character is secretly the bad guy.

There's some tension about it later, but people fight, and they move on, and it's fine.
