It's also in the developer's best interest to drag it out for as long as possible. The longer it takes for the game to die the longer the backers get used to the idea that their thousands of dollars of pledges/purchases are worthless. If the devs just say "Welp things are hosed your moneys a lost cause now" the backers will get angry and might start talking lawsuits... or bricks through windows. Star Citizen isn't going to die with a bang, a whimper, or even a retail release. It's going to linger on like a smelly fart until even the most hardcore of backers (even though they'll never admit it) will be glad it's stench is gone and they can finally breathe again.

Well as I mentioned in my last post it's slowly dying. At this point the remaining few SotA devs no longer have a office and are "temporary" "experimenting with a distributed employment model" (aka working out of their apartments). The sane backers, Garriott and the smart devs have all already left.
