That's an interesting aspect of Star Citizen that maybe doesn't get as much scrutiny as it deserves - the backers' strange pride in raising enormous amounts of cash. Not particularly for putting towards the game, but just because it's an enormous amount of cash.

It's the amount they're raising which guys like this are interested in, not the use to which it's put - "let's get to a quarter of a billion dollars guys!". Pledging in and of itself becomes an act of solidarity with other backers in a race to see how much they can raise. It's like televangelism where the virtuous thing to do is pledge more to get a bigger number - just don't ask how much crack and how many whores the pastor will be buying with it.

Give CIG its due - they sure know how to ~~milk whales~~ prey on idiots with no financial self-control.
