You can't copyright game mechanics, actually. Wizards of the Coast however did get a patent on a few things even though a lot of people argued that that was idiotic. "Turn a card to make it do a thing" was apparently patentable? Early on a few games did just 100% rip off Magic but those games never did well. That was part of why games had gimmicks and different mechanics even though some of them just got stupid. A few did interesting things but some of them just had outright confusing rules, balance so bad there was one viable deck, or hideously overpowered cards that were basically an "I win" button.
