I am absolutely not going to Get Into It, but I think there's an ethical difference between stealing from (e.g.) a Barnes and Noble vs. a small locally-owned bookstore.

That said, even if the liquor store was a "small locally-owned" one, I haven't met a liquor store owner that wasn't a chud or a creep in some way, so I think not ratting out the whiskey thief is probably the correct move.

It was actually the government owned nation wide liquor monopoly chain so not quite a mom & pop store but close :v:

I still don't get why I should feel bad about reporting theft but I'm open to new interpretations.

Regardless of morality, you report it so they don't assume it was you that took it when the count comes up short.

People ITT apparently think all theft is comparable to Les Mis and it’s just some guy trying to help his family survive! Or it’s punishing a big bad corporation, even though that’s only gonna hurt others through pricing and worse wages. The last people it would affect are the owners and executives.

Only angle I’d actually agree with fully is our justice system is about overly punishing people and not about reforming or helping, so reporting someone for petty theft is saving a store maybe $50, but potentially ruining the thief’s whole life.

Seriously tho, you have basically no liability for credit card fuckery, but a stolen debit card can make you unable to pay rent. I don't think enough people realize this...

Sorry your bank sucks rear end. If my debit card gets stolen all I do is call my bank and deactivate the card and dispute any charges that I didn't make myself. Wells Fargo returned money to me with no issue within a day of having my card stolen and used.

You should feel bad because it was none of your loving business unless you worked there and you run the potential of ruining the dudes life.

Isn't that completely voluntary for banks to do on a case by case basis?

As opposed to a credit card where a person is effectively committing fraud by trying to loan money from the bank in your name and so the legal issue is between them and the bank?

It also complicates things when you do a whoopsie with your debit card and it wasn't actually lost you just didn't look at what you were paying for. Credit cards can get that sorted out without the money leaving your account (cos they can charge the vendor two processing fees!) while with debit it's gone and you have to go begging to the bank.

You'll never experience a thrill quite like when you pirate your first movie. The power that comes from watching something without having to pay for it is an intoxication no drug can match.

However, when you've been doing it for as long as I have, it becomes as mundane as taking a piss.

There has to be a law against throwing a car battery into the ocean, it's gotta count as littering or illegal dumping or something.
