Episode 36 is up I made a friend! His name is Geoff (a ghost) and he helps me survive the Kung Fu Tower. Which is full of battles. Boring ones. I think the most fights I've experienced in the game. I get that it's an allegory for Lars and Kasey did his best to make it entertaining but 5 floors was a bit much. He probably could have lopped one off no problem. But it's a real redeeming moment for Lars at the end. Commentary On No Commentary

I think Kung Fu Tower is the best family dungeon in terms of explaining character backstory. It dumps a lot of info about Lars, and to a lesser extent Helga. It also gives some background on Grandma and why Jimmy sees her in his mind as a computer system. As a dungeon, it's kind of a pain, and even moreso if you're trying to get everything.

I did a FFV randomizer where you reroll your classes every time you get new classes, get a class level, or get a game over when you end up a Berserker, you stay one for a while and wow, maybe it's because I'm an obstinate motherfucker or maybe it's because "racist schoolgirl chaser" is a pretty hefty handicap to recover from, character-sympathy-wise, but the tower just made Lars come off even more annoying for me. you can mow the lawn and then get back to your vidya so your old-rear end parents don't have to do it. what the gently caress do you think you're doing when other people are trying to grieve, putting on polka and dancing? gently caress out of here anyway, that only lasted until floor 4 and 5 fluffyDeathbringer fucked around with this message at 21:06 on Sep 5, 2019 |

Eh, I'm not so distracted about Lars because the shut-in anime nerd stereotype is a thing I've had exposure to for a while; hell, it was a stereotype for people who post on this very website for quite some time. And now we know that Helga enables his laziness.

Lars has depression; he's lived with it all his life, and what I took out of that was that when something floors the rest of his family and makes them wonder what the point of going on, for him that's Tuesday. He can be their pudgy, dumbass anchor when they need him. Which kinda neatly ties into his mechanics in combat, too.

I think there's an undercurrent to Helga that bothers Jimmy--mainly, how quick she bounces back from tragedy. I think there's a fear she'll forget him, and quickly. You want people to be sad for you, you know?
|
# ? Sep 5, 2019 23:41 |

I don't think so, I think Helga just never lets Jimmy see her sad. That's why those moments are short and rare. And my read on Lars is that he understands Helga very well and knows how to cheer her up.

I think that Jimmy sometimes feels as though no one in his family really cares for him, save Lars. Helga runs hot and cold and tends to bounce back really quickly; Andrew cares about destroying the Pulsating Mass because it's a problem to solve, not because of how it treats Jimmy or how bad it makes him feel; and Buck kind of dislikes Jimmy anyway, or at least Jimmy seems to think so.

So Lars is the Kirsten Dunst character in Melancholia I've been having a bad week (long story, not important, all resolved now), so I spent a few nights watching "comfort food movies," which for me includes the offensively hilarious Drop Dead Gorgeous. My friend Viv said, "Everyone needs a Kirsten Dunst comfort food movie (mine is Bring It On). But for the love of god, it'd better not be Melancholia."

Lars treats Jimmy like a person, not a disease. Granted, it's not that the others don't care about him, they very clearly do, but people in extreme situations need something to anchor them to normalcy and to remind them that their suffering doesn't define them, nor does it encompass the entirety of their existence.

On the subject of Jewish family no-goodniks in the video, someone on my dad's side of the family went to jail for the Newark Jewish mob in the 1930s. Better his rear end than one of the higher-ups I guess.

lars is a developmentally arrested loser but, as this dungeon and others showed, he's still not a bad person. his freeloading is due to depression, not self-centeredness, and he's aware enough of other people's feelings to try and relieve their grief when he can (or in the case of andrew, to stay quiet and out of his way now that he's mooching off jimmy's family) honestly, he's probably better for helga's emotional well-being than a cold fish like andrew, given what we overheard during the latter's memory dungeon

The ironic thing is that Lars is taking Jimmy's situation in a healthier fashion than the rest of the family. Andrew is viewing it as a problem that can be solved, Helga is torn up emotionally, and Buck is angry to the point of making Jimmy think he doesn't like him. Lars's depression and complete lack of self-esteem has insulated him from that.

Everyone deals with their problems in different ways and I'll admit that because of my history I am really suspicious of what I suppose you could call "quiet grief" because I expect someone acting in that way to get more and more unwell. I suppose that there may well be people out there who can go through that sort of experience without outside assistance and come out of the other side fine.

Episode 37 is up FluffyDeathbringer joins us all the way from Finland! I'm always really excited to have people from the thread help with this because I think the " 's" in let's play tends to get downplayed. We're not technically playing it together but we're discussing it together. And it's more than just watching a video and talking in the thread together. This episode is about guilt. And lots of it. And not just the kind I heap on people for fun. I think Jonathan Bear gets humanized in it. While he's still two-dimensional, we learn that he's entirely our fault. And not just because of the theft. And that there's no ethical consumption under capitalism. Then we go rescue Grandma From existence. Commentary On No Commentary

I think that while grandpa went suddenly, grandma got incredibly sick and/or brain dead, and the vent prolonged the inevitable. Also I have to wonder if all the guilt we saw from robo-grandma about staying forever was also guilt regular grandma gave to Helga and Lars.

Haven't posted here yet, but watched the entire thing so far. Hottest video game dad is Nier. And Final Fantasy VII was translated in house by something like 50 inexperienced people, with no professional editing, with a busted spell check program that couldn't recognize English. All those errors were homegrown human mistakes. As for thoughts on the game, I don't know that Lars going for Hitomi in the game means he'd actually go for a high schooler in the real world. I think that's probably just Jimmy's mind's interpretation of a turbo weeb, which Lars almost certainly is.

AngryRobotsInc posted:Haven't posted here yet, but watched the entire thing so far. And in Jimmy's/Lars's defense, Jimmy is at the age where he probably doesn't really understand age gaps. If Hitomi reads as more "adult" to Jimmy, he probably imagines that she's not that different from Lars, and so in Jimmy's version of reality, it's all good.

Yume Nikki isn't really a game that you play and beat, it's more of a weird experience from the few minutes I've played. But the influence shines through in Jimmy. My ex got me into fine dining and I'd take her to Michelin starred restaurants in NYC. We had our official second anniversary dinner at a Korean ramyun place in Greenwich Village. It was cheap by the standards of starred restaurants and it was very good too. Neither of my grandmothers were big into guilt, at least not with me. I'm sure that my maternal grandmother did plenty of it with my mom, along with stubbornness. Finnish is a weird language, it's one of the only non-Indo-European languages in Europe along with Basque and Hungarian. Also "Kappo Kakko" is the name of someone from Finland and you can make fun of him by calling him "Krappo Kakka."
