Twitter lawyers are speculating that Ty brought in new counsel to protect his law firm. So Ty knows he hosed up and is trying to reduce sanctions his firm will have to pay out.

Texas has really strong Anti-SLAPP laws from what I understand. It's basically one of the worst states to file a frivolous libel or slander suit in.

Weirdly, a few months ago poor man's Breitbart Bleedingfool put out an article claiming Krakenprint laid off its entire staff, and while that wasn't true they have been having some issues. https://twitter.com/Iron_Spike/status/1169612118355849216?s=20

Sometime in the not-too-distant future, someone sifting through the rubble of our civilization will find a vast cache of polybagged and perfectly preserved comics and assume they were our holy texts based on the reverence which they were treated.

On the one hand the whole China tariffs issue is complete stupidity by Trump, but on the other hand publishers being cool with China's horrible treatment of employees and environmental record just to save a few extra bucks a copy they could easily pass on to the consumer with hardly any trouble is kinda poo poo too. And it's the small independent "woke" ones that are the most guilty of this. I don't know, I kinda can't muster up much sympathy.

It's not "a few extra bucks", the print cost difference between the US and China is such that those books wouldn't actually exist if they couldn't get the cheaper printing. US-based print costs for full-colour books are loving wild in the worst possible way. This is absolutely not a case of Scrooge hoarding a few spare pennies here and there.

I don't have my books printed in China, but there's a fairly wide range of reasons printing can be cheaper there that isn't poor employee treatment or bad environmental stuff.

Fangz posted:I don't have my books printed in China, but there's a fairly wide range of reasons printing can be cheaper there that isn't poor employee treatment or bad environmental stuff. Aside from those things, a lot of them don't care about trapping, color management, picking, or other finer quality points. But if that isn't important to the buyer, then it's hard to justify a US or European and their expense. It's also questionable as to whether Chinese printers source paper in forestry-responsible ways, but we had problems with that too that only got sorted out a few decades ago. I'm biased though, I work for a global print OEM (that is, printers buy our plates, workflow software, color products, etc) and as far as I know China doesn't buy from us. If you're a small publisher, the cost of a $7K vs $18K print run is very, very hard to ignore. It's hard to blame people when they're small operations running on kickstarters trying to get stuff published that the big names won't touch. That amount of money is the difference between things happening and not at all for some of these niche projects. I totally get why a small comic creator or publisher would go that route, because a lot of printers in the US are too busy chasing variable data and see the mid-low end of shorter run books as a lost market. The tariffs are really dumb and will not help printers in the US, just like they're actively harmin US farmers or other things because they were done in a profoundly stupid way and should be eliminated post-haste. I'm likely one of the few people who supports indie comics who is disappointed about printing in China, but again, my biases. When I had the opportunity to lead a collaboration zine, I had it printed in the United States. Could I have gotten it cheaper in china? Absolutely. But it would have been pretty hypocritical of me considering my customers are US printers. But that's a personal choice and I don't hold it against indie publishers from using non-American or European printing because they might not get to publish otherwise. kefkafloyd fucked around with this message at 23:07 on Sep 6, 2019 |

UK print costs are actually pretty reasonable for full-colour, even for small runs- just to throw that out there in case there's any brits reading this and despairing. I've compared prices with American friends before and the difference is pretty absurd. Of course, that's pre-brexit thinking....

Yeah I understand (or at least, have heard on the grapevine) that the US is way worse than Europe in both quality and price, I don't really know why.

Like all places, there's a range of quality and prices, you have to look at individual printers and their work. European and North American printers are far more alike than different in terms of quality standards, at least the major OEMs (Kodak, Heidelberg, Komori, Fujifilm) play in all those markets and supply to pretty much everybody. There's no margin at all in print and everybody is dying a slow death.
