The Maestro posted:Anybody have any recommendations for dining / cocktailing in Quito? Swisshotel was loving legit. Food was great, service was impeccable, bill wasn’t half bad. It’s an upscale place, but it’s worth it for one night. Not to be funny, but Govinda’s. They do a fixed price meal for $2. Your choice of white or brown rice, daal, soup, salad, dessert. It was filling and delicious. Not exactly upscale but far superior to any of the Hare Krishna places I’ve eaten at in USA. Also, if you see someone selling humitas by the road side, do yourself a favour and get them. They are mind blowingly delicious. If you see someone who’s selling juice, ask if they offer “tomate del árbol” juice. If so, pay them the $1 or so, and get you a large. If you see a hole in the wall Chinese place, go in and get a thing. It’s a totally different experience from American Chinese. Café Mosaico. This one’s got traditional Ecuadorean food. If you see chochos on the menu, get it. They’re this bean variety that I’ve only seen in Ecuador, and they’re available drat near anywhere. Honestly, you’ll be hard pressed to find less than stellar food, even at the tourist traps like Mitad del Mundo and such.

I've got 4lbs of boneless short rib all tied up like a roast. I want to braise it in my Dutch oven. Anyone got a go-to recipe? I'm thinking it would be treated like a chuck roast.

Tortilla Press suggestions? Also best tortilla holder (not one of the microwave warmers, just one of the ones to keep 'em warm). I've been using a clean towel but would like something I can actually set out on the table. Should I just go for one of the bog standard plastic ones? (Edit - I'm a moron and moved this to the General Questions thread.) EVG fucked around with this message at 19:06 on Sep 8, 2019 |

Looks fairly neat and can be found for next to no money. Stick a clean towel inside it and put the tortillias in. Something like this: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80328145/

I'll be in Philly for two days, one of which is business meals I can't pick. I have one dinner and one breakfast on my own, and I'm not against hitting a 24hr cheesesteak place for breakfast. Any recs? Cocktail bars would be nice too. I'll also be near Vineland and Glassboro / Rowan university.

Jim’s Steaks is the non-racist of the two original cheesesteak places. I went in winter and it was below freezing and the line was outside around the corner. “One wit wiz and a yinglings” is the way to order. Somebody that actually lives there can probably clarify or correct if I’m wrong

You should come to my restaurant, Sartre OTR, our bar manager (formerly of Sundry & Vice) just rolled out a new cocktail menu and it’s pretty killer. Food ain’t too shabby either! Sundry & Vice, Longfellow (if you’re a rum fan, make sure you go to the back bar, they have an insane collection), Lost and Found, Japp’s and Igby’s are all fantastic spots in downtown/Over the Rhine. Comfort Station is also excellent but it’s a little bit out of the way in Walnut Hills. I’ve heard good things about Aster but haven’t been myself.

It's 2019, unless you live in the middle of nowhere you can get a cheesesteak anywhere on the east coast (and probably elsewhere, but I would just be guessing at that) and they're dead easy to make at home. Like if you're only picking a few meals to have in Philadelphia you're really doing yourself a disservice in passing up all the other options for something so easily found elsewhere.
