This may be the same case here, an autosave you can't tinker with but you can return to if something goes wrong, but using it overwrites your main save.

Everyone else leaves after only 3 seasons so you've never noticed.

The show doesn’t actually state character ages explicitly very often. It’s only at the start of Unova that Ash is stated to still be 10. You can rationalize that Ash was de-aged as a side-effect of exposure to Dialga, and assume that characters otherwise age normally.
