In any sci-fi/fantasy property it always feels a waste if the exotic races aren't relevant to the cast. Final Fantasy XII had a world of pig-men, cat-plushies, and lizard-dudes. However your party consisted of six humans, one of whom is dressed up as a Playboy Bunny. That Star Wars flop was completely out of ideas. After numerous reshoots the best villain they could up with was Paul Bettany with a knife. He has two scenes and absolutely nothing to remember him by.

I mean Star Wars itself has a whole cantina of weird creatures and the climax is a bunch of humans shooting at each other in spaceships, but also a Wookie roars

Dragon Quest consistently having humans as player characters when the best thing Toriyama draws are humanoid aliens/beasts is always a low point

Final Fantasy still dips into this all the time, but if you want a less typical example I'd suggest Endless Legend. It's basically a corner of a sci-fi universe breaking into insane fantasy and it's great.

The first Final Fantasy Legend was really good for that. Start off in a medieval world with swords and magic, sure why not. Next "tier", of the tower, ocean world with pirates and cannons? Cool. Third tier, sky world with airships and rebels fighting against an evil empire? Huh, kinda cliche but okay. Fourth tier? POST-APOCALYPTIC JAPAN WITH HOVERBIKES AND DEATH ROBOTS? Wait, what? And then you fight God. With a chainsaw if you want.

The Final Fantasy Legend (SaGa) games are some bizarre bizarre stuff. Eating meat to turn yourself and party members into zombies, monsters, aliens, and robots. They remade SaGa 2 and 3 on DS in Japan. I wish we would have got them.

Final Fantasy always* double dips, usually with it's magic counterpart fueling their machines. Magitek, going to the Moon in 4, Cid's inventions in 7, the Space station in 8, and so on. Usually some big rear end ship or tank being powered by whatever is their current magic thingy. *Probably not in all of them but frequently enough that is might as well be a recurring theme.

Whether FFII or III goes for a combo sci-fi/fantasy depends on how you consider airships with nothing super special powering them, because that's basically the only big tech-y part of those. Otherwise, yeah, even in the ones that don't make that mix a big part of their setting and are mostly just straight fantasy (so, 1-5, 9, a surprising amount of 14) will usually have a dungeon or two that just decides to go hard on the sci-fi out of nowhere.

Krispy Wafer posted:Fascism is by definition totalitarian. The fact Nazi Germany had a couple of elections under Hitler is because they were transitioning from a democratic state to a fascist one, not because fascists have elections. It's tough to tell how a fascist state would evolve because they generally got stomped out as quickly as possible, but Spain kept one for 36 years and it was pretty totalitarian. The United Citizen Federation was a junta. Whether it was a democratic junta or a representative democracy is unclear. I'm an idiot that has watched the other starship troopers films and those make it more explicit that the politicians are chosen by a singular party apparatus and have to be citizens and win by giant North Korea style margins.
