So someone said that if they tied it to the left side of the truck and the right side of the car, the car would just go past the truck.

I confess I made a similar error in 1985: pulled a ‘76 Corolla from DC to Philadelphia using a U-Haul tow bar & bumper hitch on my ‘65 Fury.
