Much like rabid Islamophobes wanted Obama to refer to "the threat of radical Islam" when he was president, I want the Chapo gang to cut the pretense of "American Protestantism" and just say that the problem is evangelical Christianity. They're a completely irredeemable bloc, a virus on the American body politic. Don't bother reaching out to them.

I need to watch The Righteous Gemstones but my computer sucks at streaming HBO Go, which is weird because it streams everything else well.

I reread The Boys when the Amazon series came out, and a lot of it just makes me cringe now. In particular the bits about how Butcher doesn't hate anybody, he's just a good ol' working-class Britisher who says fag and poof and dyke and fag and fag and fag and fag and...and the bit about how the Martian Manhunter has a thing for trans women, who were described using every conceivable other term you can think of.

Warren Ellis can be obsessive about his pet issues, even to the point of reusing bits, if you dive deep enough into his bibliography. But there's no comparison to Ennis with regard to the gross edgelord poo poo.

Did you listen to one of the 3-hour call-in episodes? Only do those if you can't get enough of the regular "basement shows."

I have to admit I've found them flagging a bit lately because they'll spend the first 5-10 minutes of their podcast talking about their podcast. Just skip ahead to a fun topic.

the only thing i don't like about the show is it appears they're taking out one of the few interesting bits of the comic (the thing with black noir).

I feel like they could still keep some of that in but the ending of the season was kind of a lame twist imo.

still at least arguably an improvement on the comic though and Butcher & Homelander are both perfectly cast

The Boys' Amazon show is good because they cut 90% of Ennis' actual writing out and just kept the core concept. Ennis has literally never made a comic that lasted for more than one issue that wasn't insufferable.
I actually resisted watching The Boys specifically because I'd seen some pages from the comic book and couldn't understand why on earth anyone would read it beyond the first few pages. The concept is fine but to me it didn't just feel like a book aimed at teenage boys, but that it was also written by one.

Thankfully the TV show owns though.

Anthony Starr is insanely good in the batshit insane show Banshee on Cinemax.

Also, the plot line in the Boys about the secret island funded by billionaires where superheroes can relax and do whatever sex crimes they want might be a little too on the nose in 2019.

I'd like to poke at something Amber said during the broadcast, since she said something on how non-US people see the American healthcare system:

Once in a while papers here talk about stuff like the Dem debates and so on, but because it has to be in opposition of the current party + our current is right now a left-wing coalition, they just try to get right wing voices. As a result, you do get the same "Why is there even a debate other than how to beat Trump" sort of poo poo which you'd probably expect from an entertainer or like someone who wasn't as political, but coming from teams that are outright paid to know things about other countries. Now, once in a while someone looks a bit deeper. Our what could be described as Bret Stephens, but What If Bret Stephens Could Get Government People Fired because He's Friends with the President, and writes a thing on how he could be of the left if he wrote to the New York Times, because he's horrified at the state of healthcare in the US. And then he goes "And that's why I support Obamacare".

This is like, a translated segment of the leading paper's take on yesterday's debate.

quote:

If the best strategy for defeating Trump is to entice voters who demand a change in the White House, but without dismissing those who voted for the current President in 2016 in states such as Wisconsin, Pennsylvania or Michigan - who had voted in Obama in 2012 - so Joe Biden's supporters will be happy to point out the centrist profile of his candidate.

But if the road is to shake the electorate who is tired of this centrism and eager for bolder policies, and without complexes about words like "socialism," then the eye turns to Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren.

This was true before the dawn debate, remains true after the debate, and is unlikely to be true in the next five months until the primary election begins. If Donald Trump is not reelected in November 2020, when he is 74, his successor should leave a group of three: Elizabeth Warren, 71; Joe Biden, who turns 77 a few days later; or Bernie Sanders, who will be 80 in his first year in office.

Which is... kind of horrifying in a "Oh God. Oh God these people don't know." way.

When Ellis is on, he's on, and when he's not, he does lolrandom monkeycheese or goes on about Silicon Valley transhumanist nonsense. When Ennis is on, he's on, and when he's not, it's pee pee doo doo human being dyke whore oval office tranny rape is really really funny you guys!

As a dreaded white male who talks and even laughs sometimes, I couldn't say. I suppose the missing context would be ever actually listening to the show, which I don't think any of these people ever do. I listened to Cum Town, didn't enjoy it, turned it off, and moved on with my life. I don't know why these people can't do the same.

i agree with this but i will say that when ennis is on, he can leave the rape jokes and edgelord stuff at the door (punisher max, pride & joy, heartland, etc)

even in ellis's most highly-regarded stories, the monkeycheese and bluetooth fetish always creeps in somewhere

The way I see it, it's an extremely perverse corruption of the phrase "the personal is political." You can't just like a thing, you have to say it's good politics. Beyonce is the most prominent example of that but by no means the only one.
