I would like to know which films you consider to be pretentious and braindead, if you're going to throw around the assertion that film critics like that sort of thing. VVVVVVV thank you BeanpolePeckerwood fucked around with this message at 05:59 on Sep 13, 2019 |

I wouldn't, but if someone asked me to I'd have to say Brick. All the critics slobbered about how it was genius and such innovative film making to set Baby's First Noir Movie in a high school, but a) it wasn't and b) it didn't even do it well. Everyone acted like a high schooler pretending to be a noir character. It was like making a Calvin and Hobbes movie without Hobbes.

There is absolutely nothing terrible about Gremlins 2: the New Batch. It is a flawless, shimmering diamond of a film.

Indonesia is making their own Avengers universe based on some comics dating back to the 60's. I just saw this one (Gundala) and it's pretty good. This is the first film of the series, and there's four more coming out between now and the end of 2021. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdAhF3NYvk4

I'm a sucker for a haunted carnival, but I'm definitely disappointed that it's a meta thing and not just an anthology of storytelling.

The MSJ posted:Submitted for this thread's approval... It's weird that "Young adult horror stories from the 90's rebooted as a movie where the stories are real and trying to kill kids" is a movie genre now. Goosebumps (which was actually entertaining), Scary Stories (which sucked except for the monster designs), and now Are You Afraid of the Dark, which looks like it's aimed toward the same age group as the show but not the adults who have the nostalgia for it. Which might be for the best.

My point wasn't that Gremlins 2 is bad in any way, but that some idiot critics out there probably thought it was terrible, and simultaneously if you defend it in the wrong company even now you're seen as pompous and elitist.

I wonder what the aversion to anthologies is these days. No doubt some kind of stupid recieved wisdom, I just can't place what the origin of it is.

HUNDU THE BEAST GOD posted:I wonder what the aversion to anthologies is these days. No doubt some kind of stupid recieved wisdom, I just can't place what the origin of it is. I don't think a single one has ever been a breakout hit, which is why they're 90% horror movies where they can be made cheap and make some money back. Add in the existence of television and the response from an investor is probably "why are we making a thing that gets chewed up in one sitting when we could actually get more money out of fattening the stories a bit and airing these things over a number of weeks?" Unless you're talking about TV shows as well, it's mostly because every Twilight Zone reboot keeps failing and serialized narratives are still the "in" thing when it comes to scripted television. There are those documentary series that follow different people every episode, though, so those are somewhat thematic anthology series.

The idea that the escaped dinos weren’t immediately hunted by the government or sport by all the crazy hunters in this country who would loving kill for a chance to hunt and mount a Dino head on their trophy room within 2 weeks of the incident is the most unrealistic part of the whole thing.
