It's just accidental honesty about how empires are what we have and what we're gonna get if it's up to these people. The EU itself absolutely is divided into core nations, subject nations and intermediate nations even if their respective rulers have a common table to negotiate on. The flow of tribute is ensured by ensuring that those in power are bribed sufficiently and that they get enough to show to their people that they aren't considered traitors at home.

I love how privilege is now regularly used as excuse to justify horrendous regressive actions.

Some guy at the MIT Media Lab wrote a Medium post about resigning from his position there due to it being funded by Jeffrey Epstein, and included an addendum about how people with less privilege are justified in staying at the lab funded by rich pedophiles. Because leaving might endanger their career opportunities.

Which isn't completely wrong, but is also just completely morally bankrupt.

That's a correct use of the term, though. Being able to afford to quit a good job with a future because you want to protest the unrelated actions one of the donors is a luxury.

To be clear, this isn't a matter of the job itself being immoral, or even the institution the job is with doing immoral things. The issue being protested isn't even that the people who determine whether research is funded or not are unnacountable to anyone but themselves. It's that the unaccountable oligarch who created the job as a PR stunt is now publicly known to have been a horrible monster, instead of it being an open secret. And, like, even if he were alive, someone quitting the job his grant funded would have done jack poo poo to harm Epstein.

And the idea that you'll leave for a position elsewhere that is somehow funded and controlled by the morally pure is just another variant of trying to be an ethical consumer. Chances are, the people funding whatever job you take instead (and your own job, and mine) have pedophiles and other monsters amoung them.

I guess I should have a bit more of a material reason for my attitude. There is a difference between working at what is PR outfit attached to an elite private university and most other jobs though. I'm not criticizing the building staff or cafeteria workers at the Media Lab, but the professionals who are conscious (or at least have no excuse not to be) that they are providing cover for the worst abuses of capitalism.

It's true that damage has already been done and they shouldn't have taken the job in the first place. We can see the current resignations aren't motivated by progressive political ideals, as the people involved are literally quoted as saying that the problem with pedophiles is that don't have diverse enough networking events.

The thing is though, is that it doesn't really matter why people are quitting as long as that they are. I just want institutions like this to be dissolved or be dysfunctional, as at the end of the day it is a tool for the rich and powerful with little other societal usefulness. That is why using supposedly progressive language to justify keeping stuff like the MIT Media Lab active is what infuriates me.

Back in the day the Pinkertons literally drafted the unemployed and homeless into their ranks, but it was still a good thing when people left that job. The same principle applies today.

it's the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which is an abstract art piece, but is dedicated to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust

basically they're saying that if standing on the stone blocks is disrespectful, then so is... standing on top of American flags painted onto a pair of slippers

people sometimes pose at the memorial and posing by standing on top of it is seen as disrespectful, the person’s saying “there are people who don’t like standing on the Holocaust memorial but they’ll stand on the American flag???” and I think the thing about Asians is that touching things with your feet is seen as particularly disrespectful in some Asian cultures.

like there's been a bunch of people who've been caught in A Bad Look doing poses and poo poo all over that Holocaust memorial because they don't look up what it's for, it's not immediately obvious what it's for, but the place itself is otherwise very well positioned to take some esoteric pictures
