I should have specified songs that aren't 100% silent like 4'33", Magic Window, or Two Minutes Silence.

Are you more interested in her very avant-garde work or the stuff that's closer to traditional songs? Either way there's a fair amount of variety in what she's done, so going in chronological order is a reasonable option.

if you read the comments section of any black midi video you'll get plenty of people frothing at the mouth to tell you exactly what black midi sounds like, so you can always look at that

but if you're into the progressive hardcore side of their sound you should check out late 90s - early 00s post-hardcore bands, particularly in the san diego scene:

the plot to blow up the eiffel tower - dissertation, honey
the murder of rosa luxemburg - everybody's in love and flowers pick themselves

if you're into the talking heads / late period talk talk stuff, you should check out... well, late period talk talk:

talk talk - laughing stock
ought - more than any other day

Yes.
So would anyone happen to have any recommendations for beautiful, soothing, more or less melancholic, string driven music? The more cello, the better. Not really looking for classical, I won't say no to it either if it fits the bill but I'm mostly after more contemporary stuff, with nice clean arrangements without too much aimless meandering, and just a few players instead of huge orchestral carpets. Some examples of the feel I have in mind:

Eklipse (they mostly cover contemporary pop but I picked this example because that theme is one of the most heartwrenchingly beautiful melodies ever written)
Arcanum soundtrack
Apocalyptica's calmer side. Did I mention I love cello?
Break of Reality. No, seriously, I loving love cello. (violin is still fine too though)

I guess I'd prefer purely instrumental stuff, but some vocals aren't a no-go either. For example this song kinda fits the bill too, although the cello is very much playing a background part.

Really good suggestion as far as fitting my parameters goes, sadly the music itself just isn't quite doing it for me. I'm sadly garbage at music terminology so don't know how to explain it better, but things like that repeating note Clarity opens with kinda ruin it for me. Nature of Reality was a good track though.

canis minor posted:

Most of this is way off the mark, either by just being not what I'm after (Balmorhea; I guess I should have specified I'm after bowed string instruments. Like I said, garbage at music terminology :v: ) or also by being entirely too weird and experimental for me (Kammerflimmer Kollektief, what the gently caress even is this), but Music for Egon Spiele from Rachel's is pretty fitting, at least the conventionally melodic parts. What I sampled of the rest of their material was, again, way too weird.

Specifically for relaxing cello:

Danny Norbury
David Darling
Zoe Keating
Hildur Guðnadóttir

If you're willing to go for something a bit more abstract and amorphous, I really recommend Richard Skelton, who's also released a ton of stuff under psuedonyms. If you're willing to go down the classical route, then I'd have a few more recommendations, but Brahm's Cello Sonatas would be a good place to start.

EDIT:

For beautiful, melancholic string music in general, a few random recommendations which are famous and which everyone loves:

Max Richter - On the Nature of Daylight
Jóhann Jóhannsson - Fordlandia
Arvo Part - Spiegel Im Spiegel
Henryk Gorecki - Symphony No. 3

Yes.

Plenty of good stuff in your post, but the two I left in the quote get a special mention for being exactly what the doctor ordered. That Max Richter piece legit put me in tears, and Danny Norbury's style is like a comforting warm blanket on a dreary dark autumn eve.

Thank you.

Strange question, but can anybody recommend some radio stations that A) always play music and B) don't have commercials? I like to have background music playing on my Echo devices, but I'm too cheap to pay for a real music service. Seattle's KING FM Evergreen station is exactly what I'm looking for: constant music and zero commercials. KING FM is all classical, but a relaxing jazz or ambient station would be ideal.

I don't know what sources Echoes can play from, but there are a number of Youtube music streams that run 24/7 with no breaks, including the famous lofi study music stuff.

Beyond that, there's a wide range of Internet radio stations out there with little to no interruptions. I listen to the Rainwave game music station at work just to have something in the background, but there's also places like Soma FM that have stations covering multiple genres.

Well yeah, I know what ambient music is, but I'm looking specifically for music that makes you think of a star field and galaxies. A lot of ambient music makes you think of natural scenes on Earth instead. Or sometimes hosed up unnatural places if it's dark ambient.
