What's some good modern theory about imperialism? I don't mind if it's very situational as long as it expresses the theory behind itself rather than just yelling at a particular country being imperialist.
further support for Zak Cope and John Smith; didn't realise Cope had another book out, will have to get it.
could also try Jason Hickel - he's pretty good opposing Whig history-style approaches to Global South development. not explicitly Marxist though afaict. The Divide is quite good, and he does some nice visualisations. e.g. demonstrating the growing north/south divide from his blog

I have my issues with Galeano's Open Veins but it's a good primer on how Imperialism acted in Latin America.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I'll try and track the various bits and pieces down.

that seems to be taking orwell out of context. in the chapter he's saying that the typical english left-winger knows empire is bad, and knows class distinctions are bad, but doesn't really do anything about it:

Do not trust in hope- it will betray you! Only faith and hatred sustain.

Yeah Orwell had a lot of problems but that passage is basically a snobbier way of yelling about social fascists

Didn’t Orwell get shot trying to kill fascists during the Spanish civil war?

He got shot trying to kill catholics during the Spanish civil war.

The priests were fascist tbf, but that was kind of incidental.

Orwell was deeply flawed but I think Road to Wigan Pier is one of the most interesting insights into bourgeois attitudes towards the poor, even among ostensibly left oriented ones like Orwell

the impression I get of Orwell from homage to Catalonia is that he was an idealist who went to Spain to fight the fascists and then bumbled into the suppression of the POUM which shocked his sensibilities
