Nice, a really cool way to completely annihilate Labour politically by signing up to a deal they have said 20 times is a pile of poo poo they would never vote for, to take us into a doomed referendum where the party leader has said he will be neutral

what

this isn't labour policy at all, corbyn's said he'd campaign to remain vs any tory brexit. he's not, however, promised to campaign against his own negotiated deal, which would be insane

labour tried several times to get a second referendum amendment to may's deal, after which it would probably have relaxed the whip and the bill would've passed. i appreciate that contingent positions are difficult, but it really isn't that complicated

This is literally not Labour policy nor what he has said.

Whether Emily Thornberry's intervention is just texting poo poo to the guardian after one too many drinks is another question, but Labour has been open to "amending" a tory brexit deal in the past and passing it - the first time there was an extension this was something that was being floated as an alternative.

His position as of four entire days ago was "I'm going to be neutral", cf., which a lot of people would suggest is a campaign against his own negotiated deal https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/sep/17/corbyn-vows-to-put-sensible-brexit-deal-to-voters-in-referendum

idk what you're on about you're just wrong - staying neutral is explicitly connected to him, as PM, having negotiated a deal to put to a referendum

"i would, if i were elected, negotiate a deal and put that to a referendum. i would remain neutral in this case", does emphatically not imply "if there is a second referendum on any deal, i would remain neutral" because that would be a deranged position given the massive pressure to back remain under all circumstances

Vocally opposed antisemitism within Labour. As a lot of people consider "Labour is antisemitic" a pretext to smear Corbyn, this makes him somewhat unpopular.

watson's been trying hard to undermine the corbynite leadership, using leaks and media interventions to try and shape policy at the expense of the party line

jon lansmann, a key labour left figure and one of corbyn's most important allies, tried to get rid of him by abolishing his position, but hadn't cleared it with the relevant factions. corbyn decided that this was unwise on the eve of a general election, and quashed it in favour of a 'review', which may either be seen as an axe brushing against watson's neck or just backing off entirely

lol not even watson is saying this.

quote:

Watson believes his positio on Brexit is behind the move to oust him. He added: “If we’re serious about changing the political economy in Britain, of giving people the benefits of a transformative Labour government then let’s focus on that this week rather than having what seems like a sort of sleight of hand of constitutional change to do a drive-by shooting of someone you disagree with on the issue of the day.”

Labour MPs came to Watson’s defence. The former prime minister Tony Blair said a decision to abolish the post of deputy leader would be “undemocratic, damaging and politically dangerous”.

He added: “To suggest it at this time shows a quite extraordinary level of destructive sectarianism. The Labour party has always contained different views within it and the deputy leader’s position has been one way of accommodating such views.

watson has also been pretty inept in the past and if corbyn can actually win a GE his days are probably numbered. reports are that he's been frozen out of some functions of the deputy leadership and has just stopped doing others - at the moment he's pretty much just a liability and an endless source of bad press for the party
