Nice, a really cool way to completely annihilate Labour politically by signing up to a deal they have said 20 times is a pile of poo poo they would never vote for, to take us into a doomed referendum where the party leader has said he will be neutral

labour tried several times to get a second referendum amendment to may's deal, after which it would probably have relaxed the whip and the bill would've passed. i appreciate that contingent positions are difficult, but it really isn't that complicated

"i would, if i were elected, negotiate a deal and put that to a referendum. i would remain neutral in this case", does emphatically not imply "if there is a second referendum on any deal, i would remain neutral" because that would be a deranged position given the massive pressure to back remain under all circumstances

watson's been trying hard to undermine the corbynite leadership, using leaks and media interventions to try and shape policy at the expense of the party line jon lansmann, a key labour left figure and one of corbyn's most important allies, tried to get rid of him by abolishing his position, but hadn't cleared it with the relevant factions. corbyn decided that this was unwise on the eve of a general election, and quashed it in favour of a 'review', which may either be seen as an axe brushing against watson's neck or just backing off entirely

watson has also been pretty inept in the past and if corbyn can actually win a GE his days are probably numbered. reports are that he's been frozen out of some functions of the deputy leadership and has just stopped doing others - at the moment he's pretty much just a liability and an endless source of bad press for the party
