I can see when you are lying.

At least he's honest about it? We don't shame people who 4 years into a marriage declare "I'm gay" or "I'm trans" and are honest about it with their spouse and continue to treat their presence as important and valuable. I get the impulse, (it grosses me out, too) but shouldn't the same thing apply?

I know, I know, gay/trans people are marginalized and it's not like straight white cis males are marginalized in any way, so the calculus is different. But kneejerk reaction aside, acceptance should apply to everyone who's being honest, shouldn't it?

I don't think anyone's trying to cancel him, or say poly people should be driven out of public life or anything. The quotes in the article just made it sound like he pulled his wife into something she maybe isn't super comfortable with and then decided to brag to a soft porn magazine about how awesome it is that he gets to bang other women. If she's happier with the marriage than the article made it sound, great, but it read like he's not particularly concerned with how it affects her. But no, I don't think getting famous and then deciding you want to gently caress your groupies is the same as being LGBT at all.

Seems like he's being open with his wife and they have rules and stuff, what's the problem? Seems like you're just looking to stir some poo poo, he's being candid about something he's into. He didn't say he's off loving groupies while she's ignored and unhappy, seems like she's more into group loving than polyamory based on what he said in the article.

Also who cares if they're 30 years into a relationship or 1, people can decide they want different things at any point.

If you think the way he described it sounded like a fair and equitable relationship where they're making rules based on the needs of both parties, I don't know what to tell you. She's an adult, so if it's a bad relationship she can leave, but I don't think he's earned any husband of the year awards for letting her tag along while he hooks up with groupies. All we have is his words to go by, and by his own account he sounded selfish as gently caress, and was openly talking about things he says his wife prefers to remain private about.

I read the highlighted screenshots in the Twitter post, and it sounded way worse than when I read the whole article (I read it for the articles, guys). I didn't see it as being so bad after that. For me, it came off as him trying to be humorous about it, and it just fell flat.

I've heard him talk about it on other podcasts, but also he says:

quote:

Mollie and I have created our own rules, and compared to most of the people we’ve met who do this kind of poo poo, our rules are strict. We’re not off on our own; we’re together, a unit. It’s a perpetual state of management and communication, to the point where it’s like, “All right, we’ve got to stop. Chill.” I’m gas, and she’s brakes.

What about that sounds "unfair"?

quote:

Mollie will say, “Yeah, she’s into you. Where do I fit in?” That question comes up.

Seems like a reasonable question, certainly doesn't mean he hosed the groupie despite her disapproval. Maybe you're assuming he's a terrible person to his wife despite the lack of evidence?

Like I said, if you read that and think it sounds awesome, I don't expect to change your mind. I just assume if his own take on it makes it sound kind of like he's the guy pestering his wife into giving him what he wants all the time, the reality probably isn't better than that.

Anyone who doesn't think he's "pestering his wife into giving him what he wants all the time" thinks what he's doing is awesome, is that your stance?

It's just a different lifestyle, some people are into it and others aren't, it doesn't make me dislike him as a guest on podcasts and if it changes your view of him... well there's a Chinese guy on the line for you.

Don't know how many times I need to say I'm not trying to cancel the guy or anything, but I'm not. I don't have a problem with the lifestyle either, but just like there are healthy and unhealthy monogamous relationships, there can obviously be toxic poly relationships. Maybe he's actually better than he came off in some of those quotes, but giving an interview where he explicitly talks about things he says his wife prefers to be private doesn't show a lot of respect for her boundaries.

The second part of your post is kind of answers the reason why you're freaking out in the first part of your post. No one forced him to talk about that in really odd terms in an interview. But he did, so of course people have opinions about it.

He came off like kind of a dick to me, but whatever. If his wife feels like poo poo in the situation I hope she gets out of it, if she doesn't then that's fine. I'm not sure where you're seeing any stronger opinions like that here.

Ehh yeah I have to agree unfortunately. I feel like he could have packed a lot more comedy into the meta-story but all that stuff ended up being boring filler. It felt kinda like a first draft script. It also had the effect of making the interviews seem less funny by association. Some really good jokes throughout but it didn’t really work as a movie overall. Honestly the outtakes were the funniest part.

Yeah I didn't give a poo poo about the framing story at all (I thought the camera guy was notably bad), but Will Ferrell chewing on scenery was a non-interview highlight. He played it pretty close to his character on Eastbound and Down, but I still really enjoyed his performance.
